Donating used toys and books

What about stuffed animals? My daughter has a TON of stuffed animals that she no longer wants and they're all just in a bag :( They're all clean and in good condition. I don't want to toss them and I won't leave them at a donation site for fear of them being thrown away.

If anyone knows a place that definitely takes stuffed animals, please let me know!

Thanks! :)

There's an organization called Loving Hugs (lovinghugs.org) in Colorado that will take gently used stuffed animals. They are sent overseas to countries like Afghanistan or Haiti. They have certain guidelines as to what kind of stuffed animal on their website. I just sent off a box of them this week.

If you are on the Philly side of NJ, I gave almost EVERYTHING to this charity: Cradles to Crayons. http://cradlestocrayons.org/

They even took potties, sheets, towels, toys -- all cleaned by me-- (everything but underwear/socks and stuffed animals). It's a very nice charity with great volunteers. They are in Boston, too.

Ever since the used law was passed, Goodwill and other charities have to throw out toys that aren't in great condition; stuffed animals are only kept if their eyes are sewn on. I also found a charity thift store in Collegeville, PA that takes nearly everything. It's called Liberty Thrift--a great place to buy used items as well.

Thanks for the info!! I am also looking into decluttering my home of the kids’ toys, books and clothes. (I haven't really thrown anything out since we moved into this house 12 years ago :scared1:.)

I will definitely look into Liberty Thrift as DD is a freshman at Ursinus College. Might actually go to Family Day with a car filled with stuff not for DD. :)

Not sure if the OP is in northern NJ - the big Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Rummage Sale in Far Hills just started collections for their October sale. They take donations (stuff in good sellable condition, like the OP describes) until Wed Sept 22 (except on Sundays). I shop there often so I see first-hand how the sale raises money for the charity to do their work (home care for elderly).

The website is http://http://www.visitingnurse.org. :)

I can not remember what it is called but here in IN the cops has a box at walfarts to collect gently used stuffed animals they use them to give to kids in crisis say mom or dad or both is arrested or whatever....most all kids can be calmed with a stuffed animal.

Most hospitals have a pedriatric ward or wards an will gladly take toys for their patients sometimes a stuffed toy in a plastic bag is all the really sick kids are allowed.

I don't know the age level of your toys or books, but have you checked your local "Head Start"? I work for Head Start in Indiana, so I can't take them, but I know we always take donated things with a smile. You can also get a paper for your taxes by donated to Head Start. I would think you have one locally. Good Luck!

My sister and father-in-law went to Ursinus. It's a great school. Here's the website for the thrift store:

You want the Little Liberty - Children's & Maternity Thrift.

our PTA has a used children's book sale every near. Because the children in our school cannot afford the new books from the schlolastic bookfair, we have a used one and sell the books for 50 cents each.

If you want to send them to my school, our PTA would pay for your shipping.

We are in NE PA.
