Donating Points

Has anyone ever donated points for a charity event? How does it work with taxes? Are you able to use to donation as a tax write off? And if you are, what amount are you allowed to use? Is it the cost of the room during the season that it is booked in?

Hi Adamandallie,

I have donated my points for a charity event. It was a fundraiser for the family of a local firefighter who died in the 9/11 attacks. I went to the Disney website and got the price for a weeks stay at my home resort at the value season. I used the cheapest amount because the fundraiser was hosted by some other firefighters and I was not sure if they could be considered as a non-profit organization under the IRS and I figured if it wasn't allowed I'd be in less trouble. I'm in no way an accountant (balancing a check book is a major cause for celebration in my life.) so definitely donot take this as gospel truth. This is just what I did.

Per IRS rules, donations of the use of a timeshare is not tax deductible. I'm sure it's been done many times though.

That's too bad. The donation is going to a silent auction to benefit the teachers at my son's school in the form of grants for the classroom. At least I'll get a return in the form of an educational benefit for my son.

I don't disagree. I'm sure the reason is people who buy timeshares and never use them then try to donate weeks they wouldn't use anyway for a tax break.
