I am having a clear out of all our old clothes and things that the kids have grown out of, and would like to donate them to charity, does anyone know how I can do this?

I had heard that charity shops weren't accepting donations as they didn't have time to go through all the items? :confused3

Any ideas?

We get the bags through our door..about two a week !!

Have you thought about asking your local church mums and tots group if they have a need for the childrens stuff :)

I always take all my (decent) stuff to charity shops & have never been turned away. :confused3

Other suggestions are clothes & shoe banks which I'm sure you will have somewhere near you, usually supermarket car parks have them. They are big metal bins like the old bottle banks. Maybe play groups or schools will take in old kids toys etc.

i've always taken mine to the charity shops and they have been fine at taking them .if they havnt got time to go through them then who does :confused3 .i would have thought it was part of the job .!.....i also get the charity bags through the door .

I don't think the charity shops have stopped accepting things. I think there was talk recently of the sort of things that were donated. Some of the items were totally not fit for sale, ie really old and tatty and dirty. The charity shops don't have the time to go through everything sorting it out and then washing all the stuff.

I think as long as the clothes are ok and clean they will take them.

I think if you work on the policy of I would wear it if it still fitted etc then it would be fine but not if you were getting rid of the clothes because they were knackered

Putting things out in bags don't always get to the charitys .
I work in a cancer research shop & we never say no to any goods.

Many of the charity shops now have collection vans and if you ring them up then are more then happy to collect your things then they go straight to the shop.
Hope this helps Gem:)

Thanks guys I just rang the Acorns Childrens Hospice shop and they said they would be more than happy to take the things, they are now the proud owners of 4 black bin bags of clothes and two of shoes! I made sure that everything was clean - their stockroom will now smell of my Lenor! LOL

Thats great Gem sounds like a very good course :thumbsup2

Well done Gem. :thumbsup2 Did they come & get them or did you take them in?

I never knew they can come & collect as I have some furniture that I want to give to a charity shop but it's getting it there thats the problem.

It might be best to ring a couple of shop first Claire because not all charity shops where i live have room in the shops to display larger items of furniture .
They Salvation Army here take all items of furniture including sofa's & large wall units which they collect from you free of charge.

I took them in on the way back from collecting DD from play group, they were very nice in the shop, I think I will have another few bags for them by the morning when I have finished with the stuff that has been littering our spare bathroom for the last 6 months! :lmao:

Noticed a charity shop in our area had a plea for donations, since with recycling bins for clothes and ebay they appear to be loosing out :)

In our shop we have noticed that people are not donating as much as they used too since the recession started affecting more & more people.
We have an urgent stock appeal notice up at the moment .
