Dolphin/Swan preferred room and payment question

We are going to be at the Poly beginning Nov 27th but are thinking about adding a night on to our trip on Nov 26th.

My husband just became a Starwood Gold member and that gets us an upgrade to a "preferred" room at check in. We've never stayed at the Dolphin or Swan so we thought we'd try it...

1) What is a preferred room at these resorts? What have your experiences been?

2) Do you have to pay in full when you book or at check in?

1 - if there is a better room available when you check in, they will give it to you for no additional cost. Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn't. Better is better view or to club floor, for example.

2 - we booked right through Sheraton, they charged 1 night to our Discover and we paid the rest upon check out.
