Dolphin/Starwood Question???

I will be going to the Dolphin in just two days. I can't wait. Here are my questions. I have my room booked and the reservation has my Starwood number on it. Here is my problem. I also just got approved for the American Express Starwood card which gives me gold status with Starwood. However, i wont get AM card in time to call Starwood and give it to them. I really want the free room upgrades for my family. Does anyone know what i could do? Could i still get the upgrade if i explain the situation at check-in? Someone please help me
 
The American Express Starwood Card does not give you Gold status, it gives you a prefferred plus status.

If you are Approved for the card Starwood should be able to change your status now. I recommend calling Starwood and asking them.

You are actually mistaken. The AM card does give you gold status. I talked to Starwood myself. I just wont have my card in time that was what the question was for.
 
I think you can call Starwood and have it changed to Gold. Then, they can look at your reservation and change the Starwood number/status to Gold.

The only thing I would worry about is if they assign rooms 3 days prior, as Disney does, then your room may already be assigned. you could always ask at checkin for the upgrade, if available.

you can print a temporary card at www.spg.com

FWIW, gold status doesn't "guarantee" much. upgrades and late check-out are based on availability. here's a list of the benefits:

I got my AM card in the mail today, called SPG and got upgraded to gold. I hope we get that upgrade. I cant wait to stay at the Dolphin!
 
I, too, am spg Gold with an AMex cc. I have never been disappointed by either the Swan or the Dolphin - have received wonderful upgrades. Just have your spg # attached to your reservation (call the S/D directly and give them your #) and don't hesitate to humbly ask for an upgrade at check-in. Good Luck! :D
