This is how I feel about Sea World. I would be just as impressed by the whales and dolphins if they did the education show and skipped all the hoopla. I am amazed at them just by the sight of them - they don't need to have them do "tricks" to dazzle the audience. They should just stick with the education part.

But that's not fun and Sea World isn't going to generate enough money too stay open if the whales are just swimming. I mean I would go still so I agree with you. But I honestly believe the animals have fun doing their tricks and being fed to do those tricks.

I believe that movie was nominate at the oscars for something? I saw a little preview upon its nomination (before that I have never heard of it). The preview made me want to cry. I love dolphins, I think they are so pretty, I can't imagine people doing this to them, so sad.

It won the Oscar for Best Documentary.

I would think the training would keep the animal's mind stimulated and fight the boredom from just living in a tank.

Why do you think it's a joke? I wouldn't go to Sea World if I thought they were the same dolphins caught in the wild. When I found out they were born there or rescued then it became a different story.

I won't go to circuses because of their treatment to animals, mainly elephants. So I do think about what I'm supporting.

I know the Sea World trainers are paid. I said I wanted to be an animal rescuer not an animal trainer! Why is that a joke?

I didn't know how to get to that place. I can't volunteer my whole life since I have bills and there aren't adverstisements in the want ads for Greenpeace. When I went to college I talked to some people about this passion but nobody knew the road to that type of occupation. So, I went into teaching...which is a little like animal resuce on some days!

When I was in college we didn't have the internet or I might have been able to get connected easier. Like I said, though, I wanted to do it for my full time job and not just as a volunteer. When my kids are older I will be able to volunteer more in that area. Now, most of my volunteering is at church or their schools.

Not sure about Japan, but there are some countries that eat dogs too so it shouldn't surprise you that they will eat a dolphin or whale.

It doesn't surprise me. It's just the absolute brutal way they do it! I don't like that we have to kill cows but it's more humane that that. (I know, I've heard the horror stories but for the most part they are supposed to be dead with one jolt) If farmers rounded up families of cows and then started stabbing them I would be just as horrified!

Actually it isn't fun for them--they live in a constant state of stress and have to take the stomach meds to help prevent ulcers on a daily basis. They are very sensitive and have better sonar than our military subs--the constant noise of music/applause/yelling really makes it hard for them and why they have the stomach issues they have. If that's your idea of fun......then you can have it!!!

I couldn't watch it. I'd be sleepless for days. I read a review of the move and *that* was enough to make me cry.

I encourage everyone that I engage in these kinds of conversations to watch the movie "Earthlings". You can watch it on YouTube in 10 minute segments. It's an eye-opening documentary about how people treat animals in general. I warn though that it's not for children, some of it is very disturbing.

Asia has some "different" ideas about animals. For instance, the cute little fur cats that you find in gift shops - did you know those were made from cats, some of which were skinned alive? Many fur garments sold in the US and UK are mislabeled cat and dog fur from China.

I do my best not to buy anything made in China because of the human rights and animal welfare atrocities that country commits.

I haven't seen the movie, but I did watch the Oprah show. Watching that, I could not book a dolphin excursion for our cruise to the caribbean. I've always wanted to swim with the dolphins, but if they were captured and sold like in the movie, then I'm paying for that.

In Grand Cayman many dive shops were selling t-shirts boycotting the "Swim with the Dolphin" place before it was built. I bought one and still wear it. Those dolphins came from somewhere....

Also, I spent 11 days diving in Cozumel this year. We would walk every night past a "Dolphin Aquarium" It was so sad...

I'm not talking about "seeing them from a boat" I'm talking about swimming with them in a dolphin encounter excursion. Like a push/pull swim.

I always planned to someday swim with the dolphins but not anymore. I don't want one penny going to support these monsters! I saw a documentary years ago about how elephants are treated in the circuses and I haven't been to a circus since. My daughter just saw me type something about circuses and asked "Why have I never been to a circus?" I told her because some are mean to the elephants. She completely understood at 7 yrs. old that is wrong!

I may try to watch Earthlings. I don't know if I'll be able to handle it, though. I'm very sensitive to animal suffering!

even in a perfect world, you can't just set free all the dolphins in captivity. They would die. That's what happened to willy, and in his last years, he was still under the care of humans because he didn't know how to survive.
I don't see a problem with sea world as the breeding program within has nothing to do with the wildlife population. They were bred for this specific reason. The same reason why we breed a lot of different animals, like cows for meat and dairy. Horses for riding. Dogs for pets. I still believe they should have fair treatment though.

That's what I always thought about Sea World but is it true what that person said about their sonar being so sensitive that when we clap it hurts them? That made me start to question it. I still think Sea World above all others would treat them the best. They did make a statement after the documentary that said they would never get a dolphin from these hunters and 80% of their animals were born in captivity. That made me feel better. They haven't bought a wild animal in decades they said.
