We always rent from National so this is new to me. Since the rental counter is inside, would it be better to have DH go and the car and bring it down to the lower level baggage claim so we don't have to drag our bags out to the garage?

I guess I should mention that we're flying in on SW. We're used to flying in on USAir. I don't even know which side of the airport SW flies into. :confused3

Yeah, sure, you can do that. You'll probably be waiting a while, for him to get the car, check the car out and find his way back around to the arrival level (aka baggage claim) and locate you. But there's no reason you can't have him pick you up. You DO have to be waiting for him, because chances are if he tries stopping the car to look for you or you to look for him, he'll be waved on by security (and have to go around the airport again.
As for which side, I don't think it matters. As far as I know, the onsite rental agencies have counters on BOTH sides of the airport - and I think cars on both sides, too.

Personal 'side' commentary: THANK YOU for waiting a reasonable amount of time before bumping your post :teeth: Actually, five days indicates an EXTREME amount of patience, so I realize my "wait a while" comments are entirely out of line :) You won't need to wait NEARLY this long for your DH to come back around with the car!
