I've been searching for a rental car and so far Dollar seems to be the best deal. Has anyone used them? Also, are there any additional taxes when you pick up the car other than the ones quoted?

We used Alamo last year - my husband had some vacation points to use so the car was supposedly free but by the time the taxes were done it was $170.00 - so much for the free car :( We wished we would have used the points toward a hotel instead. Thanks for any info!

the total quoted is all you pay.
170.00 is a lot for taxes and fees, did they clip you for insurance too?

Thanks Gail - No they didn't get us for insurance... not much we could do since we only had a voucher for the rental - it was a strange experience and only our 2nd time renting a car so we were pretty clueless.

Have you rented from Dollar? I made a reservation on Travelocity for a total of $224.00 for 8 days full size. I noticed on Mousesavers you can join their FastLane but didn't know if that would include cars reserved through Travelocity....?

Dollar will probably hit you with a charge for an additional driver if you need it.

I agree with Gail, sounds like you got hit with some type of insurance/loss of use charge. Is it possible the "free" rental was for a lower category car and you were charged for an "upgrade".

You'll almost always come out ahead if you don't take a gas option, rent the car full and return it full.

We used Dollar in Nov with no problems. The price was what I was quoted and no more. I was a Fast Lane member with free upgrade, I got a mini-van for the price of a compact.......I thought that was a great deal! I had to wait quite a while for my vehicle to be ready, which seemed long but we were tired and cranky. But all in all a good deal. If you don't know what they'll be charging just ask, more than once if you have to, it's not fun being charged something that will shock you when your bill comes!

I have never rented from Dollar. I don't like their policy of holding the amount of the reservation and additional amount (which can be substancial) against your crediti card at pickup.

As to Travelocity, I have never rented a car via them either. I go to the source. :) What I would do is join the fastlane, get the member number and then call and see if they can connect it to your reservatioin. BUT....I have yet to see Dollar busy anytime I go to MCO. The only one that ever has a line ,of note, is Alamo/National.
I know in the past we have prepaid our reservation with Alamo and have NEVER paid anymore than taxes for the week, which certainly was no where close to what you paid. I would look at the contract, if you still have it, and see what they charged you for. My guess is they really did nail you for insurance or an upgrade. Taxes would NO WAY be that high.

Unless you are like me and return it on fumes. :) Actually, we have declined the gas option on our last few rentals because we found going to Hess, filling up and driving to the airport does not make the needle budge at all.

Thanks everyone! After talking to my husband he did admit he asked for an upgrade which is where the extra $$$ charged must of come from but WOW! That's almost as much as renting a car for a week. As I said, car rental is fairly new for us so we didn't question it too much - just wanted to get on with our vacation.

I did join FastLane and can cancel my res. with Travelocity if there are better prices.

This time I'm trying to get the best deal possible with the least hassle and most knowledge.... any advice is really appreciated.:D

When are you going? We're going the last week of Jan. and got a great deal with Dollar. The charge for a mid-size car, such as a dodge stratus, is $95 for six days. With taxes, fees, etc., it comes to total $114.28. That's printed right on our email confirmation, so we have proof if there's a dispute. Plus we have the added convenience of drop off/pick up at our hotel, Courtyard by Marriott DTD (for which we are also getting a great rate). We prefer not to get our car at the airport, because of the hassle involved there. We find it much easier to get the car at the hotel, even if that means incurring an additional limo fee.

However, it sounds like you got charged so much extra because you were "double-talked" into signing up for services you didn't want and weren't aware of, such as insurance, extra driver, gas, upgrade, etc. I've dealt with Dollar before, but not at Orlando. They've never pulled things like that on me before, but just about any car rental may pull stuff like that. Its not the company, its the particular office and who you deal with. The guy behind the counter gets a commission on every "add-on" you're charged for, so there's a real incentive to add on. Even if you don't agree or sign for the extras, they have been known to just add them on anyways, hoping you won't notice. Best advice, go over your contract with a fine tooth comb before leaving the rental desk, (I don't care how many people are waiting behind you, you waited your turn, so can they). Then, keep your copy and compare very carefully to the final bill. Don't leave blank spaces, if there's an option of accept/decline, make sure decline is checked off and preferably circled. If there's no "no" box, circle the option, write "decline" then your initials, then insist that the clerk also initial. Your might irk some clerk, but better than being over-charged.

Also, do make sure you have something in writing that the car had no damage when returned. I saw something on TV (20/20 or some such show), where people got a bill for damages a month or more after returning the car. Investigation showed several renters were being charged for the same damage. And do inspect the car before accepting it and make the clerk initial any damage before you leave. Sounds like a lot of hassle just to pick up/drop off a car, and it is, but worth it. That's just one of the reasons we don't like doing that at the airport. Just too much hassle when you have a plane to catch.

Thanks vhoffman for the great information! .... wow, you have a great rate. We're not going until the last week in March so rates will probably be higher during spring break time.

How did you reserve at the Downtown Marriott? We will be staying at the Boardwalk the last half of our stay so I think we would be close to that area...... thanks for any info:D

Wonderful advice and to it I would like to add: Say no to any insurance (unless you want it) and when they do something "cute" like say, "do you want the standard insurance" or " you only want the basic insurance" you say " I don't want ANY insurance". Like you said, take your time and read the contract. OR....sign up for programs that keep a MRA on file.
Then there are no questions, usually, you sign (after verifying the total) and you go.

When they ask you where you want to rent the vehicle, you select the Downtown Marriott.

I'm assuming you mean how did I reserve the rent car for pick up/drop off at downtown Marriott. When I made the Dollar reservation, they asked for location. I put in Orlando. Then a side bar came up with I think two or three Orlando locations. One was the airport, and one just happened to be our hotel, the Downtown Marriott. Just click on that. Just my luck to have it at our hotel. However, I don't know if the car is actually there, or just a Dollar desk. Then you take a shuttle to the Dollar lot. Either way it works out for us.

Also, I got a great rate at Marriott DTD, $55 per night. I got it throught Dreams Unlimited, they advertise on this board. Good luck!
