I've booked a car from Dollar for this trip, but I've never used them before. I booked online and said I'd return it at 11am, but I want to keep the car until about 5pm. Is that going to be a problem? Do I need to call them? I know it'll be an extra fee, but will it be a whole day? Thanks for any help!

You must actually get permission. Do not simply bring the car back late.

Usually the per hour rate is such that by the time you run over three hours you have reached the cost of an extra day.

Ideally you need something in writing for every transaction you make but I can't think of any way to get written confirmation in this situation.

Yes you will need to call and get permission and then will they tell you the extra cost incurred. Given the timeframe you are looking at it would be an extra day. So it may be best just putting the later time in the reservation to make things easier. You will then know the extra cost.

We often take a later flight out and get an extra day fee tacked on although it actually isn't a full day.

Well... you don't really need "permission" The car won't be considered "stolen" for 24 hours or so (I return late due to changes in business), but... Four or five hours late is still with in the same "day" and they don't really care.

The rate will be the "walk up" rate for a one day rental (over 2 hours is one day) so don't expect a "deal" :) If you have a contract it may give you that rate, but if you were using one of the numerous weekly rate deals all bets are off.

Well, it's not definite that you'll be paying more.

If you have already paid a weekly rental rate and your rental is only 5 or 6 days long, it's possible you'll pay no more, because the same weekly rental rate usually applies for rentals of 5 to 7 days. But you should double-check with Dollar and rebook the rental if that's the case.

What time are you collecting the car when you pick it up? If it's 5:00 or later, turning the car in at 5:00 on the final day should incur NO extra charge, because rental days run on a 24-hour basis.

If you pick up at 4:00 or earlier on the first day, you'll definitely be paying extra to turn it in at 5:00. For the first couple of extra hours, you'd pay an hourly rate. Past that you'd pay for an extra day.

As a previous poster said, you can return the car up to 23 hours late without the rental car company being worried about it. At the 24 hour mark they'll start trying to track you down and charging you extra late fees.

Thanks for the responses. I called and extended til 5pm and the extra charge is about $15 more. Not too bad!

In Feb I need to extend my rental by one day. I called and they were able to add the day using the same daily rate that I was already be billed for.
