Dollar Car Rental -- Anyone use LATELY?

I have used Dollar on an occasional basis and never any issue.

Just reserved a car with Dollar today as their rates were fully two-thirds less than any other "major" rental agency and about half of the Alamo reservation that I made a few months ago.

Since I am picking up tomorrow went ahead with Pre-Pay -- although I would normally never do that....

But, a few things go me thinking -- esp. the very low rates...have things changed with Dollar? Guess I will find out in the morning, but I thought "forewarned" would be preferable to finding out at John Wayne Airport.

The moment I hit the "I'll take it" button, the page flashed to a "worldwide car hire" page and I sort of had to reaffirm all the stuff I had already affirmed. Then, it only charged me the base rate for the prepaid payment, saying the taxes ($29xx) will be collected at the rental counter. Appears Dollar is now based in Dublin, Ireland, which may account for the weird tax collection thing.

Then, I never could confirm the reservation via the web. I finally ended up calling Dollar and gave them my Dollar Express # and they pulled the reservation right up and it was all fine.

Anyway...any recent renters?

I did this in Oct. but my experience is very unusual. Got a great rate but the day we were to fly down we had a death in the family that kept us back for 2 days. I changed the reservation on the phone and we were obviously dealing with an Irish agent. No problem there but when we went straight to the garage as allowed by our Dollar Express it turns out that by going through the foreign site you don't get the Dollar Express assigned. I politely raised a little fuss, got the car, thanked them and only lost a few minutes. I'd do it again but I'd contact Dollar directly after making the ressie but well before going to get the Dollar Express thing attached.
