Dollar car hire

we booked an Intermediate 4 door which turned out to be a dodge (segmina????) we have always booked an I4 size car in the past.
now this cars truck would not even hold 2 suit cases (which we also have another 2 cases inside of for the return trip ) we had to upgrade to a Jeep grand cherakee to get a good sized boot.( which they had a special deal on)
We have never had a problem before and I was wondering if anyone else has had a simmilar exsperiance?
even in the brochures they show that it can hold 2 cases and 2 smaller bags.
I could not believe we could not get 2 normal sized cases in.
I am not complianing as I liked the SUV but I was wondering if they use this ploy
to make people upgrade????

We have had an I4 in the past with no problems with cases, other than we needed to buy an extra one for the amount of shopping we bought.

This year we had a full size Impala which was way to big so next year we have just booked an Intermediate. I am a bit concerned about cases now too so would be interested to hear what people have to say.

We have just booked a I4 for next year and it did say on the web page for TCD that it holds 1 large & 1 small case in the boot, No big deal as there are only 2 of us so we can use the back seat if need be.

Thanks Jodie, we took two large cases and a large holdall this year. I think we will get another holdall for next year.

We've always had a compact Neon. Being our 3rd trip we got a free upgrade this year to a Crysler Cruiser PT. We couldn't get the cases in this that we could in the Neon!! We didn't upgrade as our last bag fitted between the kids - but we were grateful for DTD check in.

Tony 64, Can I ask what deal you got on the Jeep, we have a full size booked for next week and have always fancied trying the jeep.

it was $14 /day + tax with no increase on the cost of insurance etc to go from the Intermediate 4 door to a Jeep grand cherakee or a Chrysler 300 premium / luxury
with hind sight we should have gone for the Chrysler as the Jeep only did 18 MPG and the Chrysler is good for 21MPG if you are planning any trips to the coast then it could make a big difference.

Ha ha - only if you've got no passengers

We were given a PT Cruiser - we had been upgraded through FVC to an I2, I paid extra for I4 (just DH, me and DD 12). I was so pleased when Dollar drove around a PT Cruiser - but my delight didn't last too long. We could only get two cases in the boot (with the rear parcel shelf off) and one in the back. And as for being a gas guzzler, my god it was impossible. We drove straight down to Ft Myers (200 miles) as soon as we landed at Orlando (full tank in car) - had to fill up first thing the following morning, when we visited Busch Gardens that was a tank and a half, likewise when we drove over to West Plam Beach (130 miles) to visit our friends. As much as I loved the car, no way will we ever bother with one of those again, we'll stick to a "normal" I4. Since the price of gas was going up all the time we were there it was a bit of an issue (but the prcie of gas is till SO much cheaper than over here).

When we picked up our car this trip, we were told that Dollar had changed its fleet recently, and that the current vehicles tend to have smaller trunks - I assumed this was all part of the "are you sure you don't need to upgrade?" spiel, but maybe it wasn't!

Only true if you're doing a single-centre holiday. As we tend to have three or four (or more!) bases, it's important to us to have a trunk that makes it easy to load/unload the luggage each time.

We've been tempted to upgrade to a SUV, but have so far always managed to get 3 x cases plus a holdall in the trunk of full-size car with minimal juggling around.

Two cases and the hand luggage in the boot for us too. A holdall between the kids on the way back. However there was plenty of legroom behind the driver, DH who's 6'2". The kids are normally pinned to their seats at home when he's driving.

It was an I4. I'm not too sure how big our cases are (DH has rather efficiently put them back in the loft) but they're not the biggest - I think they are both 28" plus thier wheels. I was hoping for a bigger boot than the Neon, but it was definitely smaller. We were pleased at the extra legroom though, I guess we had that at the expense of boot space.
