I just discovered a couple of useful things using Dollar and thought it might help someone else here.

First off, I found that Government employees, including those on leisure travel, and contractors, are eligible for a 5% discount and also no charge for additional drivers. As my DH is a NASA contractor and it's also useful for me to drive our vehicle on vacation at certain times, but we don't like to pay for the additional driver, this was really a great find!

The other thing is that Dollar's Silver Dollar Club for anyone over 50 years old has these same benefits of a 5% discount and no fee for additional driver. This will help my Mom and brother who will be travelling with us at XMAS with their rental, as I can put it in my mother's name and get the discount, but she won't really be driving, so my brother can be listed as an additional driver.

I found these through clicking on "Specials" and going down to the bottom of the screen and clicking on either Government Programs or Silver Dollar Club.

Also, Dollar is much cheaper than any other companies at XMAS right now - especially for a minivan, so finding these extra perks was wonderful!

sometimes they limit what can be rented by the Silver membership. AARP is a great program with other options for car rental agencies. Often you get a much better discount with AARP or with discounts from places like those listed on Mousesavers.com

Thanks, Gail. I do also check Mousesavers regularly, but most of the discounts end before or are blocked out for the XMAS time frame. Also, since Dollar is currently coming up so much less than any of the others for this time frame, I was thrilled to find a way to save a little bit (5%) and be able to add the additional driver without paying $5 per day.

How is your DH going to prove he is a contractor? My DH is a government contractor too, but I'm just wondering how you prove that when you technically work for another company?

My DH has sort of combination NASA/Boeing badge that will allow him access to NASA on-site. It has his name and picture on it as well as NASA & Boeing. I'd think that should work.

If you are a member, try Costco, sam's club or bjs (which publish their coupons to the public).

Thanks again, Gail. I'm a member of Sam's, so I'll check there next time to see if there's anything for Dollar, as I couldn't seem to find anything online.

Also, do you need to have a BJ's membership to use the printable BJ's coupon I found by going to the BJ's site? It doesn't seem to say that you do. When you said they publish their coupons to the public, did you mean that anyone can use them?

RE: Bjs, I don't know if anyone can use them, but, my feeling (for what it is worth) is that you can. I have never been asked to prove membership for BJ's or Sam's club.

I was trying to point out, and did not say it well, that Dollar does block for holidays, but, others do not.
