A sweet treat that has created a following of its own at Walt Disney parks has made its way to Connecticut.
Stew Leonard's has launched Dole Whip, a pineapple-flavored soft-serve. It is now available at most locations, including Danbury and Norwalk, and will soon be sold at all five stores.
"Customers are loving the freshness, it's really a refreshing product," said Chris Nemer, ice cream manager at Stew Leonard's. "It's been such a big hit, we're going to continue it all summer long."
While Dole Whip appears to be regular ice cream, it is actually vegan. Stew's said their dessert is free of lactose, fats, cholesterol and gluten, and is made in a peanut-free facility.
Stew Leonard's customers can try Dole Whip for free with a $100 receipt, the same as their regular ice cream.
Mr. Frosty's in Norwalk is also on board. The ice cream shop said they are offering Dole Whip in rotating flavors aside from just pineapple, including mango, orange and strawberry.
"It's dairy free, so it's a great option for people with lactose problems." said Rosa Luciani, co-owner of Mr. Frosty's.
Luciani added that some customers are unsure at first of the new menu item.
She said, though,"Once they taste it, they love it."
