Doing the Math - Small Contract by Resale

So, I am looking to (again) add on 50 points to my membership. I want to add to Saratoga Springs (my home resort) and need the points to be available for use next year.

Looking at the resale market, I can get these points (eventually, small contracts are hard to come by) for about 73 a point with 300 in closing costs. That gives a total of 3950.

Buying direct from DVC, I get 95 a point, no closing costs and 2009 points to bank into next year. Total costs 4750.

That is a difference of 800 dollars.

If you assume that the value of those extra points is about 500 (10 per point if I were to rent them out). That's only 300 extra.

For my 300 dollars, I am getting out of a lot of hassle (just give them my CC# and the points are ready to bank now). We live in Canada and just getting US money orders to pay is a big PITA (and costs extra).

I am just not sure how that's not worth it? Maybe for bigger contracts that number gets to be a lot larger but for my tiny one...I don't think so.

Any thoughts?

I agree as well. For me, the per point savings of a small resale contract just isn't enough to worry about.

Do you have a December Use Year? That is the only UY still with 2009 points - all others are already in their 2010 Use Year so you would get points from the current Use Year and another allotment again in 2011.

You might also be able to find a resale contract with banked points. Just be aware of all aspects before making your decision.

I do have a December use year. I am not a big fan of 'might.'

Decided to go the direct from Disney route and my points are already there! (Paid about three hours ago!)

Totally worth the little bit of extra cash.

Buy from DVC. I've tried to buy small contracts through resale and I am just not fast enough on the phone to land one (11,000 emails go out from TTS ) Not worth the effort. And waiting for a specific use year makes it that much more unlikely.

Through DVC I bought two small contracts (separately) in just a day.

Larger contracts 100+ points are probably a different story.

I think you may have convinced me to go that way!
