I'm a teacher in a Catholic High School. Each trimester, we take on a different cause and get the kids involved in helping others. Over the winter we helped outfit several shelters for the homeless in the South Bronx (shirts, sweaters, that kind of stuff for the residents.)
This time around, we're working to get supplies to the servicemen in Iraq. We've connected with the Staten Island Project Homefront; they'll ship the stuff over. Today we had a prayer service, and the kids saw a video of interviews with local servicepeople and familes directly affected by the war. Each of our kids received a plastic Easter Egg today. Inside was a slip of paper with some small supply written on it; mine said "writing paper pads." Each of the kids was asked to bring the item (and as much more as he or she wanted) to school on Friday. We'll hook up with the Staten Island Project people and the stuff will be on it's way soon.
Regardless of your politics or what you think of the war, this is something we're doing for the people who are over there fighting.
I KNOW that our 2500+ kids will, as always, come through in a BIG way on this one. Sometimes it's wonderful being a part of a group of people so committed to doing good.
Here's the info for the Staten Island Project Homefront people in case you're interested: http://www.siprojecthomefront.org/ With all the money we're all spending on Disney, it would be so nice if many of us could spend just a few dollars to make life a bit more bearable for servicepeople abroad.
