Doing research... what do you eat at your LOCAL BBQ joint?

It is late... sorry if I made anybody hungry! :rotfl:

Thanks all... one thing I know I do not want is to have a fryer. If it seems like I absolutely must, I will ( assuming this even comes to fruition, but my wife has always wanted me to do this ).

You know I love you PD...but if you're not going to have a fryer..........

well then, I just really can't post on this thread anymore.

Well, for me, it is bad and I should whack you upside the head for making me even think about something that is 4 hours away.

It's 1am and I'm sitting here trying to figure out how to get my hands on a bbq brisket sandwich.

I may have to have BBQ for lunch tomorrow.

Or maybe breakfast =)

Aimeedyan, I think we should all sleep through breakfast tomorrow!! ;)

I get their rib sauce instead; have you tried it? It's not as sweet. I always ask at the meat section for a cup of the rib sauce instead of getting the sauce from the veggie area. Something my parents always did and I figured out why after getting the regular sauce once!
I'll look into the other sauce. I wasn't aware that I could get something else so thanks for letting me know. :thumbsup2

I'm hungry... :sad1:

Lots of BBQ joints don't have fryers..... They are high maintainance and can be very dangerous.

That's usually my Saturday morning goal! :lmao: Too bad DH has an 8am tee time tomorrow and I've got 4 dogs that will make sure I'm up when he leaves.

Wonder what time Cousins bbq opens in the morning...

But how can you serve fried pickles without a fryer?

Or fried okra?

Or fries?

Fries? That's what McDonald's is for!

People up here don't eat much okra. And, I'll be honest, never had a fried pickle, though I have certainly heard of them...

If this actually happens it will have a limited, but somewhat rotating menu...

I expect about 5 - 6 meat items, the same for sides, Sweet tea and lemonade.....

I want to keep the menu small, fresh, and profitable.

Oh, and I have a specialty dessert.... smoked apple pie... You smoke the apples, and then put them in a pie shell and cook in a regular oven.... It is really good!

Alaska Petes in the Poconos. I ALWAYS get the ribs, but I never heard any complaints about anything else. The decor is seen on the webpages.

Some of the high points
They have a Giant 60 in TV near the bar!:thumbsup2
They have a smoking section, that in no wqay interferes with the non smoking section.
The service is First Rate phenominal (very unusual for the Poconos)
They have Mashed Potatoes TO DIE FOR!:woohoo:

Some of the Low points
This place is HUGELY POPULAR and dont take Reservations. So there have been times they had 1 hr or more waits. Thats not good if you are with Kids.:sad2:

It is VERY VERY NOISY. People, Music, TV, Clanking plates. It dont bother me, but others I have been there with....DRIVES THEM CRAZY.

Good luck!

You knew someone from KC would have to answer this post right?

I used to hate baked beans, anyone's baked beans and then I met Smokehouse BBQ :cloud9: http://www.smokehousebbq.com/

Are you sure you don't mean The Smokestack restaurant that is now Jack Stack BBQ? They do have the best bbq beans. I also like their specialty, Cheesy Corn, and the burnt ends.

http://www.jackstackbbq.com

Jack Stack is a little too suburban and chain-like for me. Here are my favorite KC BBQ joints:

1. http://www.gatesbbq.com

"Hi, may I help you?" Beef on bun with fry, please. And a strawberry soda. I'll have the turkey on bun if I'm feeling health conscious.;)

2. http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com

Burnt ends, bbq beans and white bread and pickles. And a red cream soda.
Sauce is a little too tangy, but meat is great.

3. http://www.oklahomajoesbbq.com

It's INSIDE a gas station with an adjoining liquor store. How cool is that?

Brisket and onion rings. And a strawberry soda. I love their sauce.

Red creme soda and strawberry soda is great with bbq. Try it, you'll like it.

Papa--

Have you been to the American Royal Barbeque contest in Kansas City??

You can sample 100s of bbq items at one place. Most contestants give out free samples, or at least they did years ago. They have live music and, as I recall, an abundance of malted beverages. It's coming up in a couple of weeks.

Nope, but we are supposed to attend Memphis in May in 2008. I did attend, in Georgia, I think, something called the Little Pig Jig, or something like that, several years ago.

BTW, nobody mentioned cornbread, yet?

Being a Carolina Girl that has been transplanted to the North, I wanted to mention the BBQ that is popular in SC... Mustard based. YUM...

There are several places that serve this kind of BBQ, one of them being Maurice's Barbeque. http://www.mauricesbbq.com/ When we go back home for Christmas and Summer, we always get a gallon jug of the sauce to bring back to PA. (We're outside of PGH).

Imagine my surprise when a local radio DJ here started talking about the best BBQ he's ever eaten, and it was Maurice's!
He mentions them once a week at least, and one day even called the restaurant on air.

Another wonderful place is called Sweatman's but they don't even have a telephone, so a website is out of the question. However, they were named best BBQ one year in Southern Living magazine.

Good Luck in your venture. :goodvibes
