My DH is currently on Atkins and doing great(thank you very much). Has anyone ever tried doing Atkins on board? He can have some carbs but right now, but he's still in the induction phase and we're watching them closely. Anyone have any tips for us?

Thanks!

While I don't have any personal experience with this, I would think that it would be do-able. On the first night, explain to your server about the diet. It may mean that he orders a second piece of steak or chicken rather than having a side of potatoes, but they seem to be very receptive to special dietary needs/requests. I'm sure many people who were on low-carb diets have been able to do this.

The one thing you may want to do is to pack some snacks, maybe some cheese or those Atkins protein bars, if they're any good. It might be hard to find snacks on board which fit into the diet.

Good luck!

I think low-carb would be very doable on board. Just do the things he does at home when faced with eating out. Ordering at dinner should be easy...your servers will be willing to work with you on it. For lunches, you can get the burgers or hot dogs on deck and throw away the buns. There's also a cheese tray from room service that would be good if he's up to having a few carbs by the time you cruise.

Check out www.castawayclub.com and look for the links for the menus. You'll be able to see what your DH will have to work with.

Good luck!

I am on a simular diet like Atkins its called the low carb diet. I am on this diet so I can look great in my formal for our cruise in January.

For breakfast it should be fine for him due to he can eat eggs and have bacon and sausage. Eggs have only 1 carb each and bacon and sausage is protein.

Lunch he can have a salid and some chicken fingers, cheese but no sandwiches (bread) and french fries.

Dinner may be a little bit of a problem. He can eat the steak but no potatos, pasta, and rice. He can eat the vegetables.

Good luck on your husband keeping on the Atkins diet while on ship

Actually I think it will be very workable ... I'm doing Atkins now as well, and will be in November when we're crusiing. Obviously I won't be in the induction period at that point, so I'll be able to have some carbs during that time.

I plan to tell our dinner server on our first night ... I'm going to have the "no no" foods (rice, potatoes, pasta) withheld altogether and double up on the steak or chicken ... on most nights I'll be able to bypass dessert altogether, but I want to work in at least one so I'll go carb-fee all day and treat myself at dessert that night with something reasonable.

It's nice to have access to the onboard menus in advance, so you can know going in exactly what you can and cannot order.

I heard a rumor that there are no carbs in the Palo soufflé. Can anyone confirm....?

Dear sis did Atkins on our May 3 cruise- entirely doable and delicious! Who needs taters when you can easily have another steak, or chop or even lobster tail! Go for it! Our servers were pretty quick to realize her preferences and omit the carbs while adding allowed veggies and meats in extra portions. Now if I could only follow her example!
I would have to bypass all carbs for a few days to indulge in that Molten Chocolate Lava Cake!

I just wanted to invite the low carbers and those following other plans to visit us over on the WISH board. You will find loads of support --- and lots of 'losers'! We have some terrific recipe threads too.

Stop by and visit us [follow the link below my WISH clipart].

It's very easy to continue atkins once you get into it, BUT, if he slips, it can be tough to start again. You're supposed to go back to induction! :( I remember people at work practically begging me to have cake or cookies on special occasions (I'm sure you won't do that to your DH :) ), but you get to the point where you just don't want them. And if you have a little, it's so easy to have a little more the next day. And the next.

What I would advise is eating a lot of salads & veggies, not doubling up on meats. Sure, a little extra is fine, but it's not really filling. You can eat 3 steaks & still not feel like you've had a full meal. Plus it's not good to add all that extra protein. Remember, Atkins is low carb, not high protein. :)

Once induction is over, more vegetable carbs can be added. At some point you can add things like berries and some baked potato. Berries with plain whipped cream (no sugar, or maybe splenda) are wonderful! I bet they could make that on board!

I like carb solutions bars, but they can knock some people out of ketosis.

Dear sis did Atkins on our May 3 cruise-

That's me! I did indeed stick pretty close to my Atkins routine on ship. There are lot's of fresh veggies and most nights I ordered two different salads with no problem.

Our servers were very accomodating and left the carbs in the kitchen all the time. As for desserts DCL has some of the best no sugar added desserts. Now technically there is flour so they aren't strict Atkins they are certainly closer to a low carb diet than the Molten Chocolate Cake dear sister had.

I gained 2 pounds on our seven day cruise but most of that was because I wasn't drinking my water as needed. I lost those two as soon as I got home and back on my water regiment.

Feel free to email me with questions etc.

My friend was doing Atkins when we cruised in February (Wonder 3 night) and really had no problems.

She skipped dessert for the most part but on the night we dined at Animator's Palate she did indulge. They had the strawberry shortcake and some other dessert with carmelized macadamia nuts. She asked the server if she could just get a bowl of the strawberries with a few of the nuts sprinkled on top. What she got was a gorgeous bowl of bright red berries with lovely honey colored macadamia nuts mixed in. I know it has carbs due to the fruit and carmelization, but for her it was better than indulging in anything from the regular menu. She really enjoyed it and was happy to be able to "indulge" in a semi-sensible way.

Lunch he can have a salid and some chicken fingers, cheese but no sandwiches (bread) and french fries.

No chicken fingers they have a breading on them. On the days at sea check-out the Outlook Bar for the Chicken Wings and Blue Cheese dressing. Don't forget the veggies you can have them.

Just wanted to throw my two cents in!

When we were on board last July, I, too was doing the adkins and just asked for sugar-free dessert after dinner. They were the BEST! One night I even had 2! It was very easy to stay with it and I even lost 4 pounds from the heat I believe!
