made the correction in their favor. the amount written did not match the amount in the box. it was to pay off my car loan and never having written a check for that much i forgot to write in the hundreds. if it was not the same bank that held my bank accounts i would definitely have flagged them crossing out the amount in the box and re-writing it themselves to process for the lower amount. i know they could have just sent it back so i just wrote a second check and im glad they at least processed it for something, i just don't know why they wouldn't call me (number given on the cover letter) and make the decision themselves.

ironically i had an error last year with a check. it was electronically processed and due to what was clearly a piece of fuzz/lint on the scanner they made by 7 into a 9 and took the amount in the box over the written line. i guess is should know they will take the lower amount when i am trying to get rid of debt and take the higher amount when it was a gift check. ;)

I something similar happen to me at a creidt union. They told me that they are suppose to take what is written by word over the box number if the two does not match.

Sorry it happened

I learned the same thing last year when DD wrote two different amounts on the check. I was also told they go by the written out words.

I made a similar mistake on a bill payment this year. I put $2300.00 in the numbers but twenty-three on the word line. The bank paid $23.

glad to hear im not the only one to make this blunder. its the first time i have made an error on the check so i was a bit puzzled at why my loan was showing a random leftover amount, glad i checked my scanned check copy online instead of just calling and yelling at them making a fool of myself.

It's not the bank's fault. The reason why banks take the written word amount over the numerical amount if there's a discrepancy is for the checkwriter's protection.

It's easier for a check forger to add two zeroes to "50" than than it is to change "fifty" to "five thousand".

Yep did the same thing on my house payment and was told they have to use the written amount. I got a late notice on my mortgage. When I called to say i paid and was not late the CS rep figured out what happened. He was awesome and since it was just a mistake he took the late fee off.

It is also much more difficult to do the written portion incorrectly since you have to think more about what you are writing versus putting down a number.

Also, because of the reason you mentioned. I always make sure I put a $ sign in front of restaurant checks when I add in the tip. Without it, it is much to easy for an unscrupulous waiter or waitress to add a few digits.

My bank once processed a check I forgot to SIGN. But it was a good thing they did as it was for my electric bill!

I used to be a manager for a bank ad yes they are required to go by what is written in words not the box with numbers.
