Dogs just "know".

I think sometimes it is just the dog not liking a person for no particular reason. When I was younger we had a shepherd mix. Whenever my "Pop" came to the house she went crazy. This was a sweet, gentle man who my dog for whatever reason didn't like. My aunt had a dog that hated my brother. He had throat surgery and had a deep raspy voice and she disliked him. My brother is a little gruff but can sit in the woods and have deer come up to him and eat out of his hand. They did. Dogs, like people, just don't like some people. Of course my dog didn't like my ex-boyfriend either. I should have listened to her he was a real jerk. :lmao:

Sorry I don't see how you can say the dog knows if there is nothing shown to know! He is a co-worker with your wife and yet you still put what he may be known about?

Animals survive by instincts. They do "know" things before humans do for a number of reasons. Their sense of smell is 10,000 times better than ours. They know when the weather is going to change. And IMO, they "know" when a person does not have good intentions.

My 2 Shelties know when someone doesn't like them and won't go near that person. One happens to be my SIL. He doesn't particularly like animals and they leave him totally alone.

Dogs, cats, and animals in general have instincts, a sense of smell and hearing that are much much better than ours. They "know" things.

I don't buy the theory that dogs know when people are ill-intended. Why would so many bad guys own dogs if that's the case? And why would good people get bitten? :rotfl:

I luvvvvvv dogs, have been around them my entire life. I would take in every stray I could and rescue them all from the shelter. But I still come across dogs that will growl at me and/or snarl. And I'm not talking generally snappish or frightful dogs, I'm also talking about friends' pets who are usually very friendly.

Not all dogs are intelligent, and some are downright bullies.

I have two that to be generous are not that bright. One I call a living breathing stuffed animal. I have another that friends kid me that she is a cat instead of a dog. She is the bully. She will bark and snarl and then hide under my coffee table.

My Maxie was gentle and caring and was a mom to any animal that came close, dogs, kittens, even horses and humans. I'm not sure how that worked. But on more than one occasion she would put herself between me and a person she didn't trust. One time it was an uncle and cousin that I never trusted with good reason, they came to my house and I would not let them in the house, I went outside to talk with them. Maxie would not let me go out there without her, she had never done that before. She sat at my feet between me and them. She did not bark or growl or anything, just sat there. She was never a loud or aggressive dog. Nothing and no one challenged her except another dog and Maxie changed it's mind.
She was a fluffy lab mix, didn't look scary at all. She just had great instincts.

I had my annual pig roast this past weekend. About 50 people.... anyway, during the week, one of my wife's coworkers called to say he was attending. He left a voice message. When I heard it, my first thought was "That guy sounds kind of strange".

When I gave my wife the message, she agreed that he was "different".

Anyway, the guy shows up at the party and is in my kitchen. My Golden Retriever is outside. She is the sweetest, most gentle dog I have ever had. Totally trustworthy. And a little bit of a coward, I always thought.

Anyway, someone let her in the kitchen, and right away I saw she wanted to find something.... Well, that something was this guy! She ran over to him and started barking and snarling at this guy!

He took one look at my dog and said "I have to go; dogs always do this to me".... and he said his goodbyes, and my dog went back to being "normal"...

Dogs just "know".

I so much agree with this!!!!!
They have a sense that we just don't have.
Glad you pup got rid of that guy, I wouldn't be inviting him back~

When I was very ill & had many surgeries my dog (all 10 lbs of her) guarded my bed. My family actually had to pick her up to take her downstairs to eat & go outside to pee......

How did you pig roast end up Papa? Good weather? I know there was good food!

You're absolutely right. They also know when people don't really like them...in other words, people who are trying to fake it (like my roommate's girlfriend....the dogs won't have anything to do with her. In fact, last time she was here she called one to come over in front of my roommate and the dog literally turned his nose up at her and walked over to me.) Dogs are extremely intuitive.

Maybe the dog is just picky. I've had my 3 year old Aussi her entire life and love her to death. She has a very nice and wonderful life with me....BUT if my DH is in the room, she will pretty much ignore my existence. Pretty much she will ignore everyone and pout in the bedroom until DH is home. DD's and I were out of town for about 4 days and when we came home she came out to see the commotion, saw it was us, and then turned around and then went back to DH.

I agree....

If I had a dog that has never snarled/growled/barked at anyone ever, and then suddenly did that to a stranger (expecially one that I already was uneasy about)...I'd trust that dogs instincts 100%. Of course I wouldn't let them bite and would put them away ASAP (unless I was truely sure I was in immediate danger, of course) but I wouldn't punish the dog and I'd be on my guard with said person at all times.

I've lived with dogs since the day my parents brought me home from the hospital. Sometimes, they truely "know" when someone or something is just off.

Yes Papa did....The guy clearly said dogs always do this to him.

He wouldn't be welcomed back in my home.

Maybe because dogs always do that to him, he expected it, and tensed up and the dog sensed the fear....makes perfect sense to me. :confused3

I was assuming that your story would lead to some dramatic reveal, like you saw in the paper that he was arrested last night for child molestation or wife beating or heaven knows what else. You didn't follow through on what your dog "knows" about the guy.

::yes::
What the dog "knew" wasn't specified. There are lots of things dogs can know, like when someone has bad intentions, if someone has special needs, etc. I know I'm dense but I don't think everyone can "read between the lines".

Anyway, I'm glad the weird guy left. It kinda makes you wonder what his "issue" was, though.

Maybe he smelled like his cat.

Either way, he was no wierder after he left than he was prior to his being invited.

He was made to feel uncomfotable, so he left. I fail to say how that says more about him than about his host.

My sister and BIL have a friend who does taxidermy on the side. He is about the only person in the world my sister's dog does not like. Tucker is an 80 lb. golden/poodle mix (no debate on this part please). He is the sweetest, most loving dog in the world. And the biggest wuss. At my oldest niece's graduation party, which was in full swing at that point, Tucker started barking his head off. We all said at that time, "X" is here. And sure enough he and his wife walk in. They are very nice people. "X" has been friends with my BIL since high school. Tucker just doesn't like him. My DS said at one of their parties when "X" got there Tucker tried to climb in her lap for protection. 80 lbs of dog on your lap isn't easy. :lmao:

*Tut tut*. If you were listening you'd know your dog was saying:
"Man from outthide, pleathe help. PLEATHE man from outthide you mutht help. Look what they did to that pig. I think I'm next. There'th room for two on that thpit. Woof woof panic woof anxiety-attack woof woof. "

I don't think it's that this dog is just picky...the other one does it to a lesser extent and the girlfriend pretends to like them when my roommate is around but when he's gone completely and totally ignores them. I think they have picked up on it.

except my next door neighbor is terribly afraid of dogs, but still comes to my home, and my dog just wants to cuddle with her, or be petted, at the least.

I agree that dogs have keener senses than humans. I think animals in general do.

We have all heard the stories about the animals all heading inland prior to the tsunami a couple of years ago.

Dogs can be trained to sniff drugs, detect oncoming seizures, sniff cancer etc.

True, but I highly doubt Papa trained him to sniff out strange people. But then again I could be wrong. ;)

No offense, but I think its kind of bizarre to assume that your guest is a creep just becuase your dog didn't mind his manners around him.

Not odd at all. The dog confirmed the suspicions he already had about the person.
