Dogs and rawhide chew sticks

Another vote for never giving rawhides. I have heard way too many horror stories, not only involving choking but also involving intestinal obstructions (those little greenie things are supposed to be horrible as well). We used to get raw marrow bones from the butcher but we stopped that after one of my dogs started choking on a shard of bone and luckily I was there to swipe it out of his throat.

Our two pups love love love baby carrots, although that doesn't keep them busy for more than 15 seconds..haha. We sometimes use bully sticks but only under careful supervision. I have been wanting to try the deer antlers, and after reading this thread I think I will try them out.

I have read that dogs chew because they are bored, so I try and get mine out of the house and moving as much as possible and with two border collies it's an insane amount of exercise, but it keeps them busy!

Thanks for the good thoughts. The rest of the chew sticks are going in the trash. Poor fellow got sick last night from the medication but was able to eat some rice tonight. Of course, he ate very carefully to avoid ingesting the antibiotic I had hidden in the rice;)

He received excellent care at the clinic, and our vet has also called to check on him after getting a message from the clinic that he had been hurt.

Pumba, I love your technique with the dogfood!!!

We also NEVER give our dogs rawhide chews. One of our dogs couldn't digest the rawhides and ended up having to have a $2000 hernia repair surgery because he had trouble passing them.

We only give our dogs antlers now. They grind down to mineral dust and don't splinter, and they last forever. (And our dogs are extremely aggressive chewers.)

Nothing rawhide for my dogs ever. Bully Sticks and Pigs Ears.

Do you know what Bully Sticks really are :scared1:

I don't feed rawhides anymore either. My shepherd gets an upset stomach from them even though she loves to chew them...
