Yup, we usually take Dh's dessert to go. (Then I can eat it later when he is having a beer and Dd is going to sleep.)

Last year we "bought" two of those special cakes...we were all so stuffed at WC that we "donated" it to the wait staff, they LOVED it...
We sometimes took our dessert for later, but never food, its not something we do at home either though..

We left the Italy pavillion once with 4 large bottles of water, 4 desserts, and 4 specialty glasses! Those were the early days of the dinning plan, when the staff's tip depended on the $ spent, so the waitstaff would load the guest with many, many extra's. Disney closed this loophole in 2003 or 2004.

I bring along one of those ziplock reusable containers for each person. That way I know nothing is going to leak or spill and it can be stowed in a backpack/purse whatever. (If you are going on more rides you can't carry in food.)

We start out with a sandwich or snack in the container at the beginning of the day and then later in the day we use if for any leftovers.

If you load a tad too much on your plate during a buffet and find that you cannot finish it all, will it be ok to ask for a doggy bag? Or is that frowned upon?

I think it would be frowned upon... or else the next guy would take a tad too much (or maybe a whole plate's worth), too, with the intention of carrying out whatever he didn't finish.

I'm pretty sure if you order a plated meal and don't finish it, you're welcome to take it with you. If it's a buffet or all-you-care-to-eat situation, you are only entitled to what you consume in the restaurant.
