How do you feel about letting a dog swim in a pool? I have a pool and a dog and when it's really hot in to summer the dog will jump in swim to the other end and back, get out, shake all over me of course and then she's good for another couple of hours. Does that gross you out or would you let your dog swim in the pool??

If I had a pool, my dogs would be swimming in it :thumbsup2 However they also are allowed on my furniture/bed. I think it depends on the dog owner:goodvibes

If I had a pool, I would let our dog swim in it. She is part of the family and has slept with me since we got her 13 years ago.

I would LOVE to swim with my dogs! Does the chlorine bother a dog's skin/coat?

I don't have a pool, but I would certainly let my dog swim in it if I did have one. My dog doesn't even like to get her feet wet though so it's not really an issue.

When we had a pool we regularly fished frogs, field mice, and other various creatures out of it (dead).

Frankly, swimming at the same time as/after young kids skeeves me more than a dog. Dogs don't pee while they swim!

Your pool + your dog = your choice :teeth:

As your guest, if it grosses me out, I would tactfully simply not swim. I'd sit by the pool, sun, read, socialize, appreciate your hospitality...

I've never had a pool, so I'm just guessing but I'll weigh in.

It wouldn't gross me out if MY dog took an occassional swim, but other dogs would bug me. My own dog is just different. It also helps that she's small and doesn't shed or drool. I would also have an easier time with one dog than multiple. I figure the ratio of dog to pool, the clorine, the filter, etc. all weighs in.

I also would be more skeeved out by a non-potty-trained child in the pool than a dog. That said, I'd also take my own baby in my own pool.

I can't understand why it would gross anyone out. As stated before, a dog can't pee when he is swimming and I doubt he would do the other either.
I have seen many kids pee and other in pools both private and public, but no one gets grossed out by that. I have been to Stormalong Bay many times when they had to empty the pool and superchlorinate it after pulling out a "snicker bar".
If you bath your dog regularly and don't use the pool for his bath then he is probably cleaner than some of the people going in.
And it is your pool and your dog, if they don't want to swim tell them to stay home.
PS, I am not a dog lover per say, my son has one that lives in the house. He doesn't sleep on any beds, but in the kitchen on his bed. He does get a bath and when he was younger he did swim in the pool but didn't enjoy it since it was an above ground. He is 23 now and his swimming days are long over.

We let our dogs swim in our pool. Doesn't gross me out at all. Dog's aren't nearly as nasty as people are (IMO).

I'm not sure how much they enjoy the pool though ;)

We don't have a pool, but even if we did, I doubt my dog would swim in it. My dog almost drowned in the bathtub, she doesn't swim, she sinks.

But my friend has 5 dogs, and they all love swimming in the pool. They'll leap right in, hop back out, and then back in again. One of them, the Bearnease Mountain dog, he's so big, he doesn't actually swim, he just walks along the bottom of the pool. When he goes towards the deep end, he just goes up on his hind legs. Pretty cute, actually.

I love seeing dogs swimming and enjoying it while they are doing it. My 15 yr old will not get in unless we are in and she has a floaty to float on while we are holding on to it. She seems to relax and enjoy it as long as someone is right next to her. She is a miniature dachshund mix.:)

OT, but a friend shaves her legs in her pool. I just sit under the umbrella and read.

My Lab spent all afternoon today in the pool with my daughter and I, as she does very often. We had a great time and I don't see why anyone would have a problem with it. Yes, there's a little dog hair floating around, but other than that I agree with the others who say dogs are cleaner than some people! And I did check with my vet about any possible bad effects on her skin; he told me not to worry and after 7 years of her swimming, I haven't seen any problems.
