Doggie DNA Testing

Has anyone had their dog;s DNA tested to find out what breed(s) they are? We have a wonderful rescue dog that I love with all my heart and would very much like to know her background. She looks like she's part Black Lab mixed with who knows what.

Anyone done this? I'm thinking that this could be my Christmas present!

I'm interested too. I'd love to know what my stray mixed breed is. Every time a breeder or vet sees her they have different ideas!

My coworker did this. I don't remember how much she said it was. She rescued a dog from the pound a couple of years ago and he looked like a doberman but they weren't sure if he was full blooded. She did the DNA test and he is actually a full blooded doberman.

NPR did a story in June of the rise popularity of home dog DNA testing. They found that the results you get may often depend on the company you select. They submitted two tests to two companies and got get differing sets of results back. The Case Of The Mysterious Puppy, Solved! (Sort Of). Scientifically, neither result is necessarily "wrong", as a genetist NPR contacted told them:
So, out of desperation, we called Joshua Akey, an assistant professor of genome sciences from the University of Washington.

Akey explained that canine DNA testing is still in its infancy, and the accuracy is dependent primarily on whether or not a particular test has "markers" for the breeds that may be present in your dog. Much of the info for these markers seems to have been provided to companies by the American Kennel Club and other dog-fancier organizations.

In some cases, breeds not recognized by the American Kennel Club aren't represented well in the tests. In other cases, a test may have better markers for some breeds (say Labs and goldens) than others (griffons and otterhounds).

Akey explained that it's virtually impossible to get these companies to reveal the genetic markers they're using — so as a result, it's almost impossible to say which tests are most accurate, and the accuracy may really vary from breed to breed. So ultimately, dog DNA tests put owners in the ballpark, but they're rarely conclusive.

In a side note, the FDA is becoming concerned because companies are starting to offer similar "at home" DNA kits for humans to check paternity as well as certain genetic markers. The concern is highlighted by the dog tests that the results can rationally "vary" from test to test.

Not to mention the devastating effect it could have on the Jerry Springer show. ;)

I had a friend do one and her dog was so many different breeds that there was not a dominant one (even though she looked like a lab/shepherd). Like a PP, everyone has a different idea about what my dog might be so I am interested in the test.

OP - Thank you for rescuing your dog!!!!!

Rescuing this doggie was the best thing I've done in my life. I've never had a dog before and didn't understand how I would fall in love.
