Dog question

I have a VERY well housetrained dog that never has accidents in the house. His usual routine is his last walk is at about 8 pm, and doesn't go out again till 6 am.

He went out at 8 tonight. Just a few minutes ago, he had an accident in the middle of the hallway, and had that "I'm so sorry" look on his face. Can this be a sign that he is sick? He has never done this before.

My dog does that after she has gotten a hold of some people food. If she ever has an accident, I know thats why. Kids didnt leave out a bag of chips or something did they?

He has not eaten today. But he does that every once in a while. Other than that he is acting normal. Only people food he has had is a piece of broccoli DS dropped at dinner.

Was it #1 or #2?

ETA: The reason I ask:

If it was #1 it is very possible the dog has a UTI. That happened to my dog once and she never did it in the house before, just that one time. The urine had an odor and was blood tinged. Antibiotics cleared it right up and no further problems.

If it was #2 the dog could have a GI upset. Was the stool loose? Did the dog try to get to the door, maybe he just had to go when he came back in the house and couldn't wait? I guess if it wasn't loose and everything else seems normal, just see what happens, it could have been just a one time thing. If it's loose stool, here's what works for us: we hold off on food for a while because the colon is inflammed if the dog has diarrhea. That gives it time to settle down. Then we give a small amount of rice and chicken until stool firms up again. The only time our dogs have had these types of accidents in the house is when they have diarrhea and I know they can't help it.

If it was urine, I would say keep an eye on him for a urine infection. That sometimes gives them urgency where they can't hold it. My dog also gets urgency if he takes a certain antibiotic called Clavamox...makes him ghave to pee every 5 minutes and each pee lasts a long time!!! He took it once for an ear infection for a day, then we had to switch him to another antibiotic because of the peeing.

If it's a bowel movement, my guess is that maybe he ate something that didn't agree with him. Maybe you didn't notice it even...sometimes the stupidest little thing can get them "going".

I'd keep an eye on him. If he's OK in every other way, I'd say it's a stomach "bug" that'll probably pass in 24 hours or so.

Could be he got into something you don't know about. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again. Did he get all his outside time today? Are you sure he "went" on his walk? Whenever I leave my kids in charge at night, my dog always seems to have a problem.

Any time either of my dogs has an unusual accident like this, I take them to the vet. (I am a little over concerned about my pets,I admit...) However, I think it is better to be sure. I would worry about a urine infection or diabetes. Has your pet been more thirsty than usual? Was there any blood in the urine? Did it smell foul or of amonia? Was it abnormaly dark? I always bring a sample with me too-easier than trying to get one while I am there!To get a sample take a clean tupperware container with you when you go out. When the dog squats or lifts it leg, quickly slide it under the stream of urine. Refrigerate it until you go to the vet. I will add that when it is pouring out, my dogs have been known to have an accident in the house as they hate the rain. Good luck!

Did something scare him? My dog never went in the house. One day she fell in the swimming pool and couldn't get out. It was just luck that I walked out and found her at the last second. That very day she started wetting in the house. It lasted about two weeks, then she snapped out of it. I think she was petrified to go out near the pool anymore.

Well, he hasn't done it again, and he seems to be feeling fine. Perhaps something did scare him.

I am NOT trying to scare you but it happened to my dog out of the clear blue sky. About a week later it happend again and it was so unlike him. I wish we had acted faster b/c he had a liver problem and eventually went down hill very fast. BE very careful if it happens again in the next week or so rush him to the vet. Better to be safe than sorry.
