Dog left in car; What would you do?

There are laws about this kind of thing but honestly, the police/animal control won't really do much in this situation. The reason for this is they have no way of monitoring how long the dog was left in the car. That said, I would have wanted to leave a very snarky note but my DBF probably wouldn't let me....he would beat me to it! LOL

On the other side we like to take our dog with us on weekends when we run around. We have taken him with us and left him in the car when we are shopping, we leave the windows open and never leave him for more than a couple hours at a time and we never take him when it's more than 75 degrees out. One of our little errand trips took us to a Chipotle for lunch, GREAT burritos and they are fast!! Our plan was to get the burritos and go back to the car and eat with him, he was in the back of the van (with the freedom to move to my seat in the front when we got out) the 2 front windows were all the way down, the "wings" in the back were also completely opened. As we were walking away from the van a guy walked past us and gave us the dirtiest look, we were confused and looked back to see what the problem was, he had walked to his car and grabbed an old receipt, walked back to our van (which was also parked in the only shaded spot in the lot and it was only about 70-74 outside) and left us a "note". My DD19 went back and grabbed the note, it read "SHAME on YOU for leaving your DOG out in this terrible heat all closed up in your car!!!!!!! I HAVE called the POLICE and they assured me that they are on their way!! I will be waiting so I can take charge of your POOR NEGLECTED DOG and will ensure he's NEVER given back to YOU!!!! SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!!!!" So, we did change our plans and actually ate in the restaurant, we ate at a bar table so we were all looking out at the car, that way if the police did show up we could go out and speak with them, my DBF was finished first and when he was done he went to the car and sat there while the rest of us finished eating. After we were done we all sat in the car for about an hour waiting for the police to show up...no one ever did and yes, the man who wrote the note waited too, we finally drove off...and when we rolled past his car we waved madly at him and yelled "Have a nice day!!!!!" he followed us out and drove away. We never heard from the police or Animal Control either.

Basically the point of my story was we waited almost 2 hours and no police or Animal Control showed up.......they likely wouldn't show up at a Disney Resort. Oh and yes, I do live in CA but I live up north. Oh and our dog is a rescue as well. :)

Pixiewings, I understand your situation. We don't have a dog now but I grew up with a dog and had her for 13 years and we took her everywhere we could. My sister now works for second chance resue.
I figured if the CM's weren't going to do anything probably the cops wouldn't either. Disney could monitor the dog in the garage; there are cameras everywhere. Whether they would devote manpower to watching that particular area all day is probably unlikely. I would bet that the owners were in the park all day too as they were from Utah and probably wanted to "get their money's worth".

Thanks everyone. I have a better idea about what to do if I see something like that again.:)

Oh and FTR, if we did have our dog with us when we were at DL he would not be in the car, he would be at the kennel having a GREAT time!!!! :)

My mother has a Yorkie whom she adores. We were at DLR in late November. The car was in the shaded parking garage. We left him in the car and came back a few times during the day to check on him, make sure he was comfortable, had a bathroom break (we, of course, cleaned up after him). My mother has never put him in a kennel. She takes him everywhere and feels that the stress of other dogs and the strange circumstances (not to mention the germs and possibilities for disease) would be too hard on him (he's fairly old). Her dog did just fine that day. He goes with her in the car all the time when she runs errands, waits for her while she shops and eats. He's happy as a clam in the car. Of course, we would never do this if it were hot. However, the situation was not at all problematic. We'd have been furious if anyone had called the police.

Well I'm glad YOU know what's going on with your dog, but the problem is nobody else knows that you are watching out for the dog and they worry about him. IF I ever were to do this with an animal, which I would never in a million years DO, I think I would leave contact info on my car with my cell phone #, and actually a note stating that I will/have come back to check on the dog. At least people would know how to find you if anything happens.

just leave the dog at home geeze it's a dog, dogs do FINE in a kennel-- unless you are too cheap to spring for one :rolleyes1

I'd be ok with that.

A car is no place for a dog, even in a parking garage, even in November.

I'm not sure how being stuck in a confined space a noisy parking garage (that shakes every time a car drives past) would be less stressful than being in a kennel, especially with the air quality from all of the exhaust fumes.

The kennels at DL are very well maintained and I would never hesitate to leave my pet there! They do require proof of all vaccines before leaving your pet with them so there is little chance of your pooch getting a "disease". I agree with the poster who said "you know you're doing that but no one else does" and leaving your cell phone number so someone can call you if there is a problem. That seems like a good idea to me.

Did you know that in FL it is a state law not to leave your dog in the car and they will break into your car and call the police to get your pet out? I just read that on the main page.

How terrible! If I saw that, it would eat away at me all day. I get a pet sitter for my animals when I go away because I love my animals so much. My dog's too chicken for a kennel, unfortunately. There's really no excuse for treating an animal that way. I'm really shocked that Disney didn't do anything about it, other than to watch the car. That really disgusts me. In WDW, if an animal is left in a car, they break in and remove the animal. I wish it was that way here, too. That would help prevent this from happening again.

Not sure why everyone is so quick to assume the worst. I prefer to think that the owners loved their pet enough to take their dog with them everywhere they go. And that they did indeed make frequent trips back to the car to check on the dog.

Because if these people loved their pet so much they'd have shelled out the very reasonable fee ($20) for the dog to be cared for at the Disneyland Kennel. Seriously, if you can afford Disneyland, you can afford to do right by your dog.

We call police and animal control when ever we see an animal locked in car. Here in NM it gets very hot! We love our dogs so much we leave them at the "dog spa" aka kennel, when we are gone for more than a day/night. If we are only gone a day/night, we have a dog sitter feed them and our neighbors watch them.
