Dog Food

I feed my dogs Blue Buffalo Toy Breed Adult mixed with chicken that I cook. I tried several brands and they seem to like this one. Either the lamb or the chicken.

Our handsome cocker spaniel *now that he has his summer coat cut, when it's longer he's pretty, like Lady ~and the Tramp~* eats kirkland/Costco, our cat eats their cat food.
Dog also has a once frozen, raw chicken thigh.

I say feed whatever your dog does well on and fits within your budget. I adopted a dog from a rescue where she was being fed Purina One in her foster home and the rescue group stressed that they hoped we would switch her to a higher quality food. So we tried. Over and over, each time gradually adding the new food in and being careful with the transition. Every single food upset her stomach. She had bad poop, was irritable, and not interested in her food. Put her back on her original Purina One all at once with no transition, and she was back to normal.

After that, I stopped worrying about whether I was feeding the highest-rated foods if it worked for my individual dog. Our current dog can't handle most grain-free foods and straight-up refused to eat one of the foods we tried. Found out he does best on a lamb-based food and he is now on Purina One Beyond, Lamb and Barley. We used to feed him Taste of the Wild Sierra Mountain, which is lamb protein and grain-free and the only other food he did well on, but there was a recall a while back and we had to switch. I see it's available again -- I thought ToTW was pretty reasonably priced, only a little more than our current food.

I use 4health I get for $25 for like 50lbs on sale at the local farm store. It is rated one of the best on dog food advisor.

We feed Diamond brand. We have to get it at either Tractor Supply or Menards, so it's not available everywhere. It's around $30 a bag or so.

Our ACD gets about 1.5 cups a day and the shepherd gets 5 cups a day. The 40lb bag lasts about 3 weeks for both.

I believe the Kirkland brand from Costco is also made by Diamond.

I hope you love your goldendoodle as much as we love ours. Wonderful breed!!! We feed her California Naturals because this is what her previous home fed her. I am 99% sure it is gluten free. If she ever has health problems I will try something else. (Ridiculously expensive but sometimes I feed her food from the Honest Kitchen as a treat and she is so happy she rolls around after. You can get free samples by emailing them)

I don't know if I imagined it, or if someone here mentioned to check out some bad reviews on the Rachel Ray dog foods? :confused3

I spent a little while researching this. It seems like there were some bad reviews, but only on some sites and some were from the same reviewers.

I have to wonder if this was, in part, a smear campaign by other companies who don't like that this grain free food is as good as theirs, but at a more affordable cost, with better availability at local stores and supermarkets?

WalMart had all excellent reviews from "verified purchasers". http://www.walmart.com/ip/Rachael-R...g-Food-14-lb-Dogs/24093636?page=seeAllReviews

Additionally, there were NO recalls on this food that I can see from the FDA. http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/SafetyHealth/RecallsWithdrawals/ucm393160.htm Surely, if things were as bad as they claimed, something would have shown up in testing??

At any rate, I'm with most whose dogs are loving this food. I'm still in the testing phase, as I would be with any food, but so far, so good.

I've heard & read different reviews too Around here though it's a moot point It would blow my budget off the charts ( the only down side to having all these " puppy heads " )

I didn't notice bad reviews on her food here but if you check out dogfoodadvisor.com it will tell you what is bad and good in her foods. When I looked at it some of her foods are pretty bad but the grain free gets better reviews. HTH

Are you referring to the Rachel Ray foods? Where are you buying?

ETA Granted, I don't have seven dogs  I only have two, but this food, in WalMart, doesn't seem to be too much more than the other brands sold there, which makes it convenient and affordable. From what I understand, it can be more expensive elsewhere, which is why I'm asking you.

I was referring to the Zero Grain foods, and the link I posted was for them.

Yes I was lazy and didn't copy your post  but I was " talking " to you ;) Further up thread I admitted I have had to basically feed crap/Pedigree dry to the gang for $$ reasons All seems well, not what my choice would be, and hasn't been for the first 12 / 13 years of Fantasia's life but until something drastically changes financially well Wal-Mart 40 # bag every 2 weeks @ $20 best I can do They're not looking to eat the horse so I guess everything is fine

someone mentioned a food @ Tractor Supply that I'm going to look into though

We must have been posting at the same time, Ruthie. :p

I added something to my post above afterward.

I did see your earlier post, which is why I was confused. At WalMart, it's not too much more expensive than the other foods, and seems to be much better quality (if your dog doesn't get sick from it, as some have attested!). I guess the jury's still out, but by outward appearance, it seems to be a good food at a reasonable cost, and available if you need to buy it at 3am, or with other purchases, lol. Probably worth the relatively small added cost to get something as wholesome.

Our vet had worked for many dog food companies and said Costco brands were very good. He also said pedigree canned was the cheapest big brand canned he would use without being a premium brand. We use Nutro as one of our dogs is picky.

My three dogs are PICKY. I've never seen anything like it. The only food they like is Rachel Ray's Nutrish, but only the chicken kind, lol. They're ridiculous.

We have a very picky mini doxie and went thru a lot of trial and error before settling on primal frozen raw nuggets. He's a long haired doxie and his coat is so silky now being on raw food plus its helped bring his weight down to an ideal amount. It costs about $25 a month for the raw food.

We feed our dogs Pedigree Healthy Weight. We've run the gamut on "gourmet" foods (Blue Buffalo, Royal Canin, etc.) and the Pedigree is the only one my very corn-sensitive lab doesn't react to. My guess is that the others are cross-contaminated.

I know that a lot of people are very invested in feeding their dogs certain types of foods, but from my observations of the dogs around me I don't believe it makes a difference.

I feed all my animals Fromms. I find it to be reasonably priced. I feel both the Adult Gold for my standard poodle and the Grain Free Gamebird for my maltese mix. The Gamebird is more expensive than the Gold and I have been thinking of transitioning just to the Gold but my little dog loves the Gamebird and I only feed a little of it per day and allow them to freefeed off the Gold the rest of the day.

ETA: I would recommend that you start with at least one FULL bag of what your breeder is feeding now and then transition the puppy to whatever new food you choose.

Just curious for the people who feed their pets raw food. Are you not concerned about food borne pathogens that occur in raw foods potentially infecting your pets and your family? I mean, I see a lot of people concerned here with "grain" in their pets' foods. What about disease causing, potentially life threatening organisms? :confused3 Major veterinary organizations and the FDA recommend against it.

I'm really not concerned. The raw food we use is frozen and the freezing process alone will kill off a lot of things. Our vet approves our using it. Like I said it has made our dog's coat go from coarse to silky and his weight is really under control.
