My daughter and I are leaving tomorrow for a trip overseas. I came home from the store today, and found her passport on the ground, next to the dog's bed. It has teeth marks on the cover, but the pages all seem to be intact, though there are teeth mark impressions on the pages from the force of his jaw biting the passport.

Obviously, there is not time to go get a new passport. I am really hoping this one will be ok. Did some Googling, checked the State Department website, I think we are ok since the pages are not torn. Oh I do hope we are ok!

This dog is a year and half old German Shepherd. He is 120 pounds. He has many dog toys, but sometimes he just has to go find something else to chew. In an instant, he can destroy a remote and shred your taxes. He has talent, that's for sure!

We thought he was done being destructive, and hasn't really done anything like this in months. My other GSD was looking at him when I came home, with what I am calling a look of pure joy knowing he was going to be in trouble. Yes, I know, they live in the present and don't know they have done wrong, but when you see the passport wet and chewed, you can't help but let out a scream, and the dogs know who the guilty party was. My female just sat there, looking very, very pleased. These two, their dynamics remind me so much of children.

He also chewed up my the case for my daughter's wedding DVD. :headache: The DVD is scratched, but it still plays. I can always make another copy of the DVD, but that passport, that could be a problem. He is so, so lucky that I love his big goofy face.

Depends on any number of factors. I've got a couple of cancelled passports, and they're cancelled with a stamp on one page and hole punched twice on the cover.

I've heard that some ports of entry have refused to accept passports that were wet. They made the traveler wait until the passport was dry before they'd accept it. It would be up to each government employee whether or not they'd accept it. Some might consider it "mutilated/damaged" whether it was intentionally damaged or not by a person. The most important thing is the information page and that there are no holes nor any information that's obscured by the damage.

I've got an early 90s passport, and that silvery ink on the surface has rubbed off, but that was always accepted. Newer passports don't have the same issue.

I believe all US passports now have an RFID chip. It is identified by this symbol:

I have been through some Customs where this is scanned, so hopefully, your chip is still intact/scannable.

Uh oh, someone's in trouble.

Can't help you with the passport-but I think the GSD would be finding himself in a nice roomy crate when I needed to leave home.

As long as none of the pages are torn and all the information is in tact I think you will be fine.

As for the destuctive part, well one of my shepherds is 8 and she was very destructive as a puppy now she isn't unless and I, for the life of me figure out the fascination, unless she gets a hold of my toothbrush. I have too keep several extra in the closet.

Thanks for the information and what to look for! RFID chip looks ok, though there are tooth marks near it. Just to be sure, I ran off to the post office this morning to have the passport looked at (since I have no time to travel an hour and a half downtown for what the person downtown told me will take 3 - 4 days, no same-day unless emergency), and I was told it should be fine but to take the birth certificate just in case. Nothing is ripped, but there are definite tooth imprints. Guess I will know for sure if we get to travel after a few hours.

I do hope we don't have to resort to locking my boy in the kennel again. He has been so good for so long, but if he keeps this up, the door is going back on the cage. His sister GSD will be very, very pleased if that happens. My husband is going to have his hands full while I am gone. :)

Don't believe everything you are told on the phone, if you have proof of travel they will make you a passport in a few hours.
