Dog attacks/kills 11 day old baby-so sad

71-pound pet dog bites, kills
newborn in Independence

An Independence family's newborn boy was
killed by the family's Siberian husky, which
jumped onto a bed where the 11-day-old
was in a car seat and bit his head, authorities
said Friday.

Robert D. Hocker "died of head injuries
suffered in [a] canine attack," according to
the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

The attack occurred shortly before 12:30 p.
m. Thursday, authorities said.

West Hennepin Public Safety Director Ray
McCoy fought back tears at a news
conference Friday as he said that none of the
baby's four family members was in the
bedroom when the 71-pound husky, named
Dealer, bit the baby.

"As you can imagine, the family is grieving,"
McCoy said. "This is a horrible tragedy. The
loss of their baby boy has had an extreme
effect on everyone." ....

Parents~ Never NEVER leave an animal alone with a small baby or child, even if you think your pet should be nominated for sainthood. Animals are animals, with animal impulses and behaviors. These poor parents are going to have to live with this huge error in judgement for the rest of their lives.

I wanted to say ANY animal, cats can smother, dogs can bite, they are animals after all, NOT humans......... avoidable tragedy!

The main problem, IMO, with dogs being alone with littles is that they might not even *think* they are attacking. It could have just been the way the dog might have been with another dog or puppy, but humans are of course more fragile.

It's this sort of situation that caused my mom's friends to be horrified that she was keeping her malamutes after I was born. Thankfully she never forgot that they were dogs with a different code of behaviour, was watchful, had set herself up as alpha long before, and didn't leave us alone with them.

I'm not sure what you are intimating. Should people get rid of their pets if they have kids?

This is exactly right. Alaskan Huskies are big, strong, faithful, pack animals. and when you live with a dog, you are the pack. to that dog, a new member was brought in. this is how dogs acclimate themselves with other dogs, but the dog didn't discern that this child couldn't handle being "played with" the way it would play with another dog. I'm positive this was not a malicious act, but its no secret that huskies are not great choices with small children in the house.

this is a sad, sad accident.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see where it said the child was left alone. Someone could have been in the same room and if this happened, but the time the person could get the baby away from the dog he could have been dead. It happens in an instant.

We got the same spiel, ironically enough it was from the same people who wanted us to use their 50+ year old cribs and lectured us on wasting money on a good carseat since they never had them and they survived


This is a tragic accident but it should just bring attention to the fact that animals and children need to be supervised- each for the safety of the other. Having kids doesn't mean you can no longer have pets- how irresponsible would that be if everyone who had a child just abandoned their pets

I have seen this behavior between 2 dogs before... a established dog in a household interacting with a new puppy being introduced. It's dominance behavior. The established dog is saying "this is my pack, learn where you stand in it"... it's not to cause harm at all.

Problem is, human physiology is much different then a dogs. The same movement with a human baby can easily lead to death. The dog and child should never have been left alone.

Sorry to say it, I know not all dogs are alike, but they do get jealous. I don't they all handle it the same either.
