Dog at resort. Did I do the right thing?

Jen Jen , I'm sorry, but you are wrong !!!!! If someone will bring animals in a room against the rules, what's next ? What about fleas or ticks that could be left behind. If I saw this happen , I'd do the same thing. WDW has rules for a reason! I guess it's okay to sneak extra people into a room also ??!!!

Jen, Jen,

I must also state that it IS our business. Because when people sneak their animals in and if their animals do damage, guess who pays, EVERYONE! So if it's going to effect my pocketbook down the line, than it is our business.

Well, I'm glad you "tattled". I'm a teacher and I always tell my kids that the only time it is acceptable to tattle is if someone is doing something dangerous. Having a dog in a hotel where it doesn't have permission to be is dangerous. It could bite someone, spread fleas and ticks (which spread diseases) all over the room for the next guest to enjoy, leave behind hair and dander to cause a serious allergic reaction, etc. When it's a service animal that is there with permission, housekeeping is aware of that and the room is properly cleaned afterwards. Also, service dogs are well trained and used to being in lots of different situations. They aren't a risk to anyone. When your next door neighbor is sneaking in a dog - it could be Benji or it could be Cujo. There's no way to be sure. There are many good reasons that dogs aren't allowed in hotel rooms - for safety and comfort. Good for you for doing what was right!

I am a mommy to two dogs whom I adore. I would never take them to a place that didn't accept pets, nor would I ever leave them locked up in a hotel room all day long. That being said, unless the dog was actually disturbing you in some way, the only reason you had for calling and tattle-taling on these people was that you are a busy body. (snipped) >>>>>>>>>>>>

I don't think so. Rules are rules. I personally have two big dogs. They spend about 10% of their lives in a kennel because I'm not presumptious enough to assume that just because I like my dogs everyone else will too. We travel 10% of the year or so and it's the kennel for them every time. Disney doesn't allow dogs in their hotels so my dogs stay in the kennel - period. I would have done the same thing. I also don't happen to really like other people's dogs. And what if the dog had bitten my child? I have a kiddo with Asperger's. She's pretty rough with our two labs (golden and a chocolate) but they take it because they love and protect her. But I worry each time she's around a strange dog that her actions may cause a dog to nip. I should NOT have to worry about that at a Disney hotel. Period.

Jen Jen- to me this is like stealing... many hotels that allow pets also require an additional fee to clean the room & de-scent it-hiding the dog would be stealing-going to a resort that doesn't allow pets and bringing it in is saving you money which means you're ripping off someone along the line . We're not talking about Motel 6 here- people who 'smuggle' their dog in could easily be making it hazardous for small children or folks w/ allergies. And think of housekeeper walking in and startling the dog- who knows how the dog would react- which literally puts the dog at risk.

I have a 9 yr old golden and we travelled from NY to Fl last year- I planned ahead, used AAA, and made arrangements to have a pet friendly hotel avail at every stop. And it wasn't easy w/ a large dog! Many places accept up to 40lbs but not over. Now in Fl, I make arrangements for her to stay w/ a friend- and that wasn't easy either. But as a responsible owner- her welfare is my concern and I haven't found a kennel that I feel comfortable enough to leave her for the weekend.

OP did the responsible thing. A nosy neighbour is going to report you when you take a towel home w/ you not when you're doing something like this.

No matter what the right thing was done in reporting it. If the guest had permission to bring the dog than that is another story. But if management got all up in arms about it then it's pretty obvious the guest did not have permission. What about the maid service? What if he or she was attacked by that dog? You don't go out and enjoy yourself and leave the dog alone in a strange environment. As I have said previously, I also am the owner of both a dog and cat and they are my babies and even though I miss them very much when we're away I know it is not right to bring them. They are much better off at the pet resort I trust them with.

There are kennels at Disney so I can't understand why they didn't bring the dog there.

You're like the neighbors who have nothing better to do than to watch out the window to see what other people are doing all day, then calling everyone else you know to gossip about it. Then you come on these boards and bring it up to everyone because your conscience is bothering you, and you want everyone to tell you what a wonderful person you are and that you really had no choice. If you saw someone stealing, or beating someone up or something, then you would have had a good reason to get involved. Otherwise, you're just taking pleasure out of causing trouble for other people. I'm sure this will make me unpopular, but that's how I feel.

Well, you got one thing right. It will make you unpopular. You are very wrong.

I see JenJen is very new to these boards and the only posts it seems she's had so far is here.

Hey JenJen--be careful how you judge people. It's obvious you've gotten very upset on this subject but just don't go assume what type of people we are because as you stated in your own words, you will be very unpopular on these boards. There will come a time when you are going to want our advice and we won't be so quick to help you out.

Although her post WAS NOT friendly....
I really think that was uncalled for. Whether we agree or disagree with one another, there is no reason to be unfriendly to fellow posters.

Just for the record, everyone has the right to report something if they feel it is causing /or will cause harm to others. However, I tend to like to avoid conflict. Even so, if the opportunity presented itself, I probably would have just directly asked the guests if they had permission, notified them of the rules, and left the responsiblility of doing the right thing in their hands

OP has no idea if management got up in arms about it--the dog and owners/ guests were never seen again. They could have been visiting someone or even friends of an employee.

Yes, if they were staying there, the WDW kennels would definitely be the thing to do! :sunny:

You know I really do not see how this can even be debated. The rules are NO DOGS, unless they are service animals. You tell me how that leads for any leadway, it doesn't. It means no dogs, no dogs staying, no dogs visiting, no dogs period.

As I stated earlier in this post, rules are there to protect everyone, not the few. They are also set up for everyone to abide by, not pick and chose at their whim.

One of the main problems today with society is that section that does not want to get involved, wants everyone to mind their own business, leave it alone attitude.

Basically it's a neighborhood watch situation, those that enforce need the eyes and ears of the many. If someone walks out of a shop with something they did not pay for I would report it, as it is wrong. If someone has a dog in their room, again its wrong so I report it. I would not confront either person as I feel that is not my place. After I report it, if management knows this person has a reason for the dog being there, so be it. No harm done.

This is turning into a debate. Please just answer yes or no without getting upset. Disney has rules in place concerning animals. The rules apply to everyone.

It's good to know about the no dogs rule at WDW. Also, that there are four kennels available. This thread has had some good info :sunny:

We just adopted a very cute sweet non shedding housebroken little dog who really doesn't bark. I wouldn't even consider bringing him to a hotel room where he doesn't belong. What if he gets scared at unfamiliar surroundings and chews/destroys/soils WDW property? What if the maid comes, he gets out and is lost somewhere in Florida? Where would I take him to go potty without being noticed? How do I explain to my children my flagrant disregard for important rules?
If the people in the room next door to me were obviously smoking in the room, I'd let the desk know. If there are pets in the room next door, I'd let the desk know. Rules are rules and they are there for a reason. I love dogs and pets in general but I don't think keeping the animal alone in an unfamiliar hotel room while you visit the parks is particularly good for the pet. JMHO but I probably would have called too.

I would always go to management rather than confront the guest directly in this sort of instance because you could ask for trouble. If they had done that a huge argument could have ensued and who knows where it could have gone from there. Leave these types of matters up to management.

I didn't mean to be unfriendly to JenJen but if you read her post she is going so far as to insinuate what type of neighbor she is and is the type of person who looks out her window all the time to see what neighbors are doing and that wasn't nice. I do not think she was doing this intentionally while on vacation.

Hey....this poster probably feels bad enough that she started this, don't make her feel worse.

We should probably all let this topic now die before it gets out of hand and we start arguing with each other.

The original poster has NOTHING to feel bad about. She most certainly did the right thing!
rebecca, you did what you should have done. And thank you for doing it!

The way I see it, if you see something that could hurt someone, it is your duty to report it... no matter how insignificant it might be at the time.

Maybe you don't... but I know a little boy who is so allergic to dogs that he would die if he entered a room after a dog had been there, the dog didn't have to be there at the same time. :earseek: So, I thank people like the original poster who are looking out for the general public, it is a far fetch but she could have saved someone their life! :cheer2:

I travel everywhere with my German Shephard :paw:. Even overseas. With that said I would not take my pet to a hotel that was not "pet friendly". My mother has allergies and I understand fully what an attack could mean for her and others. You did the right thing. We have used the Disney kennels often and our Shadow LOVES them!! He whines when we leave!! They are very clean and I know he is watched all day. We usually stay at CR or Poly so we are close and my DH carries his cell so they can reach us. I can go by and see him anytime (and usually do about 6-7 times a day!) If I know we are going on a "commando style" trip I will not bring him. It is not fair when he can stay at home with my brother and sleep in his own bed and have his hugh yard to run amuck in. And lets face it. If you were a dog would you really want to be stuck in 1 room for a week or so with your family? :rotfl: Not me!!

Hi! I just noticed your post. We are going to Disney for Thanksgiving weekend and we also would like to bring our shephard. :dog2: Which kennel do you use or which one do you prefer and also do you recall about how much their fee is? We are staying at Caribbean Beach but not doing any parks so we will have ample time to visit her throughout the weekend. Thanks!

They have some very nice kennels, and the one at Epcot for a small additional fee will walk your dog for you. The one at Fort Wilderness is probably the nicest location to get to and walk your own dog.
