60 million containers of wet pet food recalled after deaths

WASHINGTON -- A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site --www.menufoods.com/recall -- early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738.

The company said it manufactures for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

"To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product," Henderson said.

The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.
Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.

Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million.

Ironic...that's how the apes overuled the Earth on PLANET OF THE APES.

Luckymommyx2, thank you for posting this. I searched it out, here is the link: http://www.canada.com/topics/news/n...=a83dbded-44c8-415b-8028-7e2a6d925a92&k=57374 My schnauzer has vomited twice, undigested canned food, which we bought at Wal Mart. DH and I were just an hour ago wondering what made him vomit for the second time. He quit eating his food after the first event, was real sick for about 3 days and then got better, and then today he is sick again. I will get him to the vet. Much appreciate you!

I can't get the website to come up. What are the brands of Dog Food? We don't feed our dog any wet food but DH bought our dog the wrong brand of food @ PetSmart. She threw up everyday until she finished the bag. Now that she is back on her regular dog food she is fine.

OMG I now need to check my babys food! She threw up undigested food the other day, then wouldn't eat it whenever I put it down. I switched foods and she's been better.

She also had a case of the runs after throwing up.

I will be checking the website in the morning.

I thought i just heard Eukuneba also this morning. I don't see it listed here - did I hear right (I was just walking by tv). I wonder is it included or excluded?

I would call just in case. I usually give this brand to my "baby", but I am using Iams right now.

This is not good.

My poor kitty has been eating "Special Kitty" for years. But this past Feb. he stopped eating. I figured he got bored with it. Then we saw him drinking out of the pool and thought - maybe that's the problem - he's gotten sick from pool water.
We would try other brands to see if we could get him to eat. He would just put his nose up to them as well (probably cause the special kitty stuff was in his system as well) and then we would flip flop back to the special kitty stuff.
Then I saw this post last night and couldn't believe it. I hope my cat isn't suffering kidney failure?!?
I'll have to take him to the vet this week. Poor thing. I have 3 pouches left and will be heading to wal-mart to take them back.
I'm hoping if we just stop giving him this stuff that he will bounce back=/

WHEW! Purina seems to be safe!:thumbsup2

YIKES :scared1: There are so many flippen brands!

Thanks for posting the list Bicker.

I hope everyone's fur babies are okay!

She threw up everyday until she finished the bag. Now that she is back on her regular dog food she is fine.

No flames please- but why wouldn't you change her food if she kept vomiting-- why make her finish that bag:confused3

Thanks for the list bicker. Ours was on the list. We returned the cans to wal Mart today.

Just checked and all seems to be safe(only 2 cans of wet dog food and not on the list)

Iam's and Eukanuba were not on the original list issued by Menu foods, but they are also being recalled. You can see the specific lot numbers on the Iam's and Eukanuba web sites. I had no idea so many brands were all made by the same company.
