Using this example, "the person" WOULD be correct if she/he would have had NO intention of investing the money had she/he did not buy into DVC...right? :scratchin
I am not sure I understand your question. Are you saying that you cannot count the original payment if the person did not buy into DVC and then did not invest it? If that is the case we are comparing apple to oranges and it is not a valid analysis on one where the person "blows" the purchase price.

The bottom line is that since nobody knows the future, anyone can make whatever assumptions they like to prove their point. I just bought in and did not even try to quantify the financial analysis (although a "numbers guy" by trade). I can't accurately guess what my rate of return on my initial investment would be over the next 30 years. Even if I did, I would also have to know the future tax rates to determine my "after tax" return. I would similarly need my crystal ball to predict the increase in room rates, maintenance fees, etc. - just too many moving targets !

The way I look at it is - if I invested the money, I would be taxed on the interest income. The cost of the vacations will go up (and probably faster than a conservative investment) but I would not be taxed on this appreciation (30+ years worth). I like to look at it as "tax free" income that I get to enjoy every year.

My suggestion is that if you have to rely on the financial analysis, DVC is probably not for you. Just sit back and let the value of your vacations appreciate tax free.

You are comaring a single stay to a one time investment of money that is spread out over the entire length of your contracted time. Try looking at it over the course of 40 years, and capare that to staying mutliple times over the course of 40 years. You will find that it is cheaper to be a DVC member, since the price you pay for your investment will never increase, whereas the price of styaing at the WDW resorts goes up each year.

You do realize that every year your points renew, and you do not pay for them.

Now, I disagree - you are being too literal. "I have never been, but don't like it" which was my original post implies that what I am saying is "I don't like the attributes of it" or "I don't like the idea of it," or "I have experienced similar things and based on the information I have, don't care for it." You have to take the statement in context - words are meaningless without context.

By the way, my original opinion of SSR when it was announced had me quite excited about it. I loved the original exterior concept drawing and still love the exterior of the resort - its beautiful to look at - perhaps my favorite from the outside and will only get better as the trees grow. I love the spa concept (and spas in general). I love being close to a golf course. Eventually, other information and the reality of my own Disney travel style (no car, we don't take our clubs, nor am I going to take time at Disney for a spa day I can get for about 20% of the price at home - I get an employee family discount at a local spa) convinced me it isn't a resort for me. (The nail in the coffin though was the room decor, I know a lot of people love it, but it is so Not Me - I do have to say that most of the DVC room decor is pretty darn ugly - its was already a hard competition for the ugly couch competition at DVC before SSR opened - my previous winner was the one at BCVs - nothing beats the shower curtain in a handicapped room at BWVs for ugly, though). So my original preconcieved notion was quite positive.

I am going through the same process with VCR - if they ever happen. At first, I was thrilled by the idea. I love the contemporary decor and the monorail. Now I'm much more hesitant to see how its implimented - more points than the other resorts might turn me off. We didn't spend nearly as much time in the MK this trip - and will spend less as the kids get older. I'll be happy if it happens - if it isn't the resort for me, it will definately be the perfect resort for someone, but my excitement is tempered - and the resort hasn't even been announced yet.

I am saying that one cannot count a presumed RETURN on investment if the person had no intention of investing monies not used on a DVC purchase. I agree that the initial cost & maintenance fees should be factored in. I may not be making sense :goodvibes . What I'm trying to say is that a person would not necessarily have a 'lost investment' cost.

Since I am the one that started this thread, is there anyway that I can request to STOP it? You are all confusing the cr*p out of me! People have gone off on so many tangents on this thing. When reading, I have to ask myself "What was this thread about again?" :crazy2:

I GET THE POINT ALREADY! I'm doing my research on DVC :scratchin and "no", I will not be asking Dave to marry me. :rotfl2:

In the meantime, let's originate some new thread topics because this one has been hashed out and beaten to death. :badpc:

Unfortunately, just about any thread here with more than four pages almost always deteriorates into one of those contests in which all the participants get wet. It's unbecoming and unhelpful, but it happens all the time.

But don't worry -- nobody blames you for squabbles between other people.

Finish your research and come back here and ask questions and you'll find plenty of help.

Good luck!

LOL, disneylady! :rotfl:

I think this post is a fitting end to your thread, so I will grant your request and "STOP" it for you.

Best wishes -
