Does Zooming in Degrade Photo Quality on Memory Maker?

I have the memory maker and one of the options you can do, is zoom in on alot of the photos. If you zoom in and save it and then download that zoomed in jpeg, will it degrade the quality?

Normally, when you zoom in on a photo, it will degrade and you might notice a difference depending on some factors: how big the pic is to begin with, how large you are printing it out

By default (as you mention in your second statement) it has to.
Fewer pixels in the zoomed area, blown up larger.

Depending on the original's resolution, and how much you zoom will
affect the final result.

So really the question is...does anyone know what the resolution is? Also, how large of a print can you make from the original image? This will give some idea of how much you can crop a photo and still get a decent print.

The system will not let you zoom in farther than is optimal for image quality.

I have zoomed in substantially on many of our shots and never had an issue with the quality. But then I don't enlarge them to poster size either.

Yup.

Somehow license plates photographed (from a $60 "video camera") from over 2000 feet away... with numbers and letters 2 pixels tall... suddenly de-pixelate into crystal clear full-screen images.

The originals are provided at 300 dpi and have no appreciable drop in quality in printings of up to a 16x20.

Zooming in as previously stated will of course drop image quality.

zooming in this case is another word for cropping. Anytime you crop an image you get a smaller image. The more you crop, the smaller the new file will be. As for how much an effect it will have on the final image, that depends on how large of a print you want. For the most part you'll be fine with 4x6 or 5x7 images. Once you start getting 8x10 and larger then, depending on how much zooming/cropping you did, you'll start to run into trouble.

I did a lot of this with mine, especially on ride pictures, with no noticeable onscreen degradation. That said, I have not yet attempted to print them at any size.

...and don't forget about the computer program that can predict the missing pixels in the photograph to render an image that is only partially there
