Does your supervisor....

My supervisor could do most of my job, but there's things I do that he couldn't--like create print ready marketing collaterol and write press releases.

I could also do most of his, although I wouldn't want to. He's in the field all the time, I prefer to be in my office. Especially because I got a promotion and with it I got to move into the second largest office space yesterday. It was vacated by someone whose position they didn't fill and eliminated after she quit--I think partially to keep her from trying to come back. :rotfl:

We work together as a team, and I love it, because he's only around for a few hours 3-4 times a year--talk about working indiependently! The other people in our HQ office are all HR and accounting. I'm in operations. So I never have anyone looking over my shoulder. My boss could care less HOW I get my work done as long as it's getting done. I quite often DIS during the day while sitting on hold or while waiting for someone to get back to me with additional info before I can finish whatever I'm working on. :thumbsup2

I feel bad now. I am quite well acquainted with the firm Caropooh (OP) is working for. And the ones she has worked for since I met her in 1979. She has been my DW since 1984. I was trying to be funny.

dont feel bad alanap. i thought it was funny and actually laughed as i read it,,lol,, i do things like that all the time with dw. she posts here too ya know,,lol,, in fact this would be a good spot to pick on her too, being as she is co owner of our business and will openly second geuss or correct me on jobs. and to answer caros question, she can do about 80 percent od the things we do with out me even being around. 95 with me on the job to help her with technical stuff, in fact if i take a regular job like i'm trying to, she will continue to run our crew and do painting/remodeling repair work while i go to the 9-5.

No way. We've just got a new manager that was brought in from another part of the company and has no idea what any of us do. This is the second time they've done this-the first time was a complete disaster. Not only did the first one not know anything, he refused to listen to anyone that did know anything. This new one seems more open to knowing what she doesn't know-so we'll see.

Both of my supervisors could handle the answering of the phone and a couple of reports. But the majority of the reports that I pull, they haven't a clue.

dh left his job recently and frankly i believe they are probably going nuts right now. he had sups that knew his job and sups that did'nt. he had no issue with the one's that did'nt but respected that staff was doing their jobs correctly and supported them. his 'breaking point' was getting 2 new sups in a row that had no clue but made sweeping detrimental changes that caused horrendous issues with staff and service delivery. the first at least admitted she had no knowledge into the nuances of the services they delivered so she did'nt try to change things that way-but felt it was'nt necessary to cross train staff to provide back-up and support when necessary (huge mistake when you've got a large pool of people near retirement, when they go so does the knowledge of how to do their jobs). the second one was worse-he had a minute amount of knowledge but it was horrendously outdated and he kept trying to implement changes that had been considered YEARS ago but had either failed or had been proven catestrophic. he refused to consider that his staff was more experienced and educated in the hands on job. he was also one who did'nt believe it was necessary for staff to be cross trained-and as a result when dh fell ill it was compounded by a supervisor and remaining staff who had no clue how to do the daily operations (let alone put out fires)-and this supervisor was met with a 'protective wife' in me who refused to allow him to badger dh with emails and phone calls while ill to continue to do the job:furious:

as a result of bad supervision dh left. his employer is faced with losing the ONLY person who had current and historic knowledge of the systems he administered-let alone the only person who worked in the creation, implementation and training of line and support staff in those systems. his supervisor is 'forging' ahead-but dh has left, as have at least 2 of his co-workers-leaving behind an overtaxed unit of unexperienced staff who don't reccognize that some of the on-going changes are not only 'technicly' wrong-but may endanger them for violating federal laws (which are very clearly written that the employee is not exempt from by virtue of not being educated about them by the employer) .

My supervisor knows part of my job and could probably get through some of it, but not all of it. Neither does the director of the department. They know the basics to get the job done, but if a problem comes up, they do not know how to go about getting this corrected and such. And I am the only person in my company who does what I do. Job security yes, but a PITA, oh yeah.

It doesn't bother me that the supervisor or director have limited knowledge about my job, they know I can do it and are very supportive. The know they don't know it and don't claim to know. What bothers me is when someone outside the department tries to tell me how I should do it or how I should do it differently to make it easier for them. Sorry, I do the job how it should be done and not to please anyone else.

Its almost as bad as when Im sitting in a meeting with various people throughout the company and although they have no clue what I do, they try to tell me how I should do it.

I laughed when I read his response too! I PM'd him and told him he was weird!

My direct supervisor can as we have "working" supervisors. My dept director can't. I work in a hosp lab. It's funny because she and I had this same conversation a few weeks ago when someone in another dept asked her if she could cover a dept and she said no as she hadn't been trained in their procedures. She knows the principles behind the tests but not how to run the machines etc....

Don't feel bad. I didn't know you two were married

Ok, back on topic. I don't have it with my manager. But I do have it with the back up personnel for front desk coverage. I have a manual for the front desk so when I'm out, those backing me have a reference. Hardly anyone uses it.

No mine does not. She has great supervisory/management skills though.

This is only one of the reasons that a "MAJOR aerospace company in Seattle" is going to hell rather quickly, but this is not unique to B... not Airbus.

It's a managment style that basically says that if the boss keeps up on knowing your job they are not doing the things that a boss should be doing.

no, my manager doesn't have a clue. When she first came to my dept. she sat down with me to learn my job. I trained her on 2 different occasions and 1 year later, she still doesn't know how to do it. She's always pushing us to cross train in other areas, but she can't do the same thing. Everyone in my office knows how to do someone else's job if they had to except her. :sad2:
