Does your spouse work shifts or straight 9-5?

My spouse works.....

  • Regular 9-5 hours (or 7-3, 8-4)

  • Rotating shift (days, eves, mids)

  • Set shift (2nd shift or 3rd shift, etc.)

  • Crazy hours (Never the same week after week)

  • Miscellaneous

Just curious how many folks out there have a spouse that works a straight 9-5 job or a job that has rotating shifts. I had been looking forward to DH retiring from the military so that he could work "normal" hours, but we are right back to working shifts....ugh, but at least he is off on weekends so I really can't complain, but some times I just long for those regular 9-5 days.

DH works approximately 9-5. Usually gets to the office b/t 8:30-9. And leaves anywhere from 4-6.

He works 10:00pm - 6:30am Sunday night - Thursday night, and one weekend a month.

I voted crazy hours. He usually works 10 hour days - day shift M - F. About one week a month he does swing shift instead. Sometimes he works either Saturday or Sunday, and about once a month he does a 12 hour shift (7pm - 7 am) on the weekend. He averages at least 25% overtime, which we are not happy about.

This is better than his old job, which rotated shifts every month or so and included a lot of times where he worked 7 days a week.

My dh works a heck of a lot longer than 9-5. His stated hours are 10-7, but it's 9:45 and he's still at work. He's salaried, too, so we're not talking OT.

My DH works the craziest hours. He can start anytime from 2 pm - 5pm, work his shift and and then have to be back at work at 7 am. Because he is a stage tech, when there is a show change, he may put in 16-18 hrs, come home and be back at work 8 hrs later. I saw him yesterday for the first time awake since Sunday. His days off are never the same, I have to check his schedule to see if we happen to have a day off together. Many times he will work 6 days.

My job is basically 7am - 3pm with Sunday & Monday off.

DH works 7pm - 7am 3 days a week. He works Thurs. - Sat. (comes home on Sun. morning) for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks he switches to Mon-Wed. Every 8 weeks it works out that he gets a week off when he switches from the Mon. - Wed shift because he comes home on a Thurs morning but doesn't have to be back until the next Thurs when he starts his Thurs - Sat. shift. Yes, I live by my calendar. I have his work weeks blocked off in purple marker for easy planning. :rotfl:

Now that DH is retired from the military, his regular work day is 6:30-2:30. They sometimes need him for overtime, and he has the choice of taking the pay or comp time. If he knows he will need time off during the week, such as when his dad was sick and he was going to NC every weekend, he works extra hours in advance.

But I well remember the days of shift work, during our courtship and early in our marriage...we were both working mids, then I was working swings while he worked mids, then I went to days and he stayed on mids...glad to have that over with!

I answered miscellaneous because DH is a college teacher and although his class hours are set, he has many other responsibilities as well. Some days he goes in about 8 a.m. and I don't see him until 9:00 that night. Other days (but not very many), he might go in just to teach his classes. Plus, he is trying to fit in time writing books and articles, he lectures for various organizations and goes on some "personal development" trips. *Sigh*, I've often wished he had a 9-5 job that he could leave behind when he got home, but he wouldn't be happy that way. Oh, well.

My DH works 8-5 Mon. thru Fri. most of the year. Two months of the year he has to work overtime but he can do it when he wants. He is lucky that he can work it so that he can still be at the kids activities. This week he worked 4 am-5 pm.He will also work all weekend. :sad2:

DW works 8 till 5 some days, but a lot of over time, last tuesday she went in at 7 am and got off at 11:30,,,, pm

i work most days from daylight till bedtime:)( major dis avantage to being self employeed

DH is the manager of his office, so he works like 9AM-7PM usually. Sometimes he gets home aorund 6PM. He sometimes has to go in on weekends, sometimes not. It depends on what's happening. It's a real estate office, so he has to be available when needed.

My DW basically works 9-5 (actually 8:30 to about 5:30 ish)

I work 24 hour shifts every 3 days.

DH is a self employed director of photography/director. He works whenever the shoots are scheduled. During football season, he subcontracts 4 days/week for the Ravens, so we never see him on Fall weekends. This time of year, it's 60-hour weeks and a lot of travel. In May alone he's going to Fort Lauderdale, Philly, Pittsburgh, and San Fran. I'm lucky if I know his schedule 48 hours in advance.

My DFi is in the Army and when we were in Virginia he was a lifeguard and worked maybe three hours a day. Now we've moved to Cincinnati and he's a recruiter and works 7:30am-9:30pm or sometimes 11. It sucks but it's only for three years (hopefully). He also works Mon-Sat. so we really only get to see each other Saturday night and Sunday but it makes the time we do spend together very nice. But I'll be happy when I get to see him more.

My DH works M-F 9-5 in a home office. He typically is always working. He is new at the company and proving himself so he hasn't learned to put the blackberry away. Most of his team is on the west coast so he tends to start working later and work later into the evening. He also pulls many weekend hours when there is a lot to do. We are looking to move to S. Cal, then he'll be on track hour wise with his team.

I was the one working crazy hours. I was a restaurant manager for a while. YUCK. I couldn't do it. I start a insurance job M-F 8:15-4:30pm Monday!

Voted miscellanous. DH is a real estate agent and works whenever clients need him. He also works as an insurance agent and that is also when clients need him. Normally he goes to the office about 8:30 does what he has to do at the real estate office, goes to the insurance place a few times a day and get home around 7. In between he drives me to work and picks me up since I don't need a car and he does. He may go to lunch with me if I'm not subbing. Yesterday he didn't get to the office until 2 since we went to support my friend whose son had surgery and then we went to lunch. He can take a day off whenever needed or wanted.

DH has a 2 month rotation at his job where he either works 8-5, 2-11, or 12am-8am. Can't wait until he goes back on days, he's on the overnights right now. :(
