Does your school enforce the dress code??

My son attends a public school that requires the students wear uniforms everyday. If they don't, they can be put out of the school.

They boys have to wear gray pants, white oxford type shirts, the school tie, blue vest, and black shoes. The sweater and blazer are optional.

The girls wear gray skirts, white oxford shirts, the school scarf, and black shoes. the vest, sweater, and blazer are optional.

They also have a gym uniform that they must wear. They can only wear white sneakers for gym.

Um. They enforce the no hats in school rule. But that's about it. The things I see on some people just gross me out. But then again, my mom's a teacher, so I've been taught to dress appropriately. Some teachers will tell a kid that they shouldn't be wearing what they're wearing. But that's really it. Even the principal just makes comments like "ladies longer shirt tomorrow". But in a public high school that litterally has students that come from way below the poverty line, all they way up to filthy rich, in one building, they have bigger problems on their hands.

The only one the school enforces here is no hats, but they will bend the rules if necessary. They let my godson wear his baseball cap after one of his brain surgeries since his head was shaved and he had a big cut where they operated on him. And there are no bandanas due to gang colors. Other than that its pretty much whatever you want to wear. I would hate to see them wear uniforms here, I think it is just wrong that boys can wear uniform pants but girls have to wear skirts. If my daughter can wear uniform pants if she wants then I would be fine with it but I would not ever force her to wear a skirt every day!

Well, the school(I don't attend, I'm homeschooled, but all my friends do, and I'm there every weekday for sports every season) does have a dress code. It's enfored pretty well, or so I've heard. My friends tell me stories, and my best friend's mom works in the office, and says a lot of girls are sent in for either wearing shorts/skirts WAY too short, or shirts that either plunge too low, or are strapless/spaghetti straps.

It isn't really that hard to enforce in Maine, seeing as kids wear sweatshirts basically until school is out.

However, I just recently have been seeing the Principle around, and, with examples like that who MADE the dress code, I'm surprised it isn't enforced at all! She is LATE 50's and wears skirts shorter than any teenage girl I've ever seen, dresses the same way, shirts with spaghetti straps(if any), shoes 2 feet(well...you get my drift) tall...it's horrendous!!

Actually in most schools the dress code for the students doesn't apply to the teachers. The high school I sub at requires school polos for the students but the teachers are only required to wear professional appearing attire. Normally I wear slacks and a polo because it is easy and convenient but I could waer anything I want to as long as it looks professional and who is to define professional. I do on occasion wear a tank top covered by a light cotton shirt and matching pants. This is Florida and it is getting warm and humid.

I agree that the teachers do not have to abide by the same dress code - it shouldn't be necessary as they should be dressing professionally to begin with. I'm amazed at what some of the teachers/administration at the high school wear. I don't think they should be in tank tops/short skirts (see it all the time) if it's against code for the kids.
I guess maybe that's part of the reason the dress code is so loosely enforced. Kind of hypocritical to send someone to the principals' office because their skirt is too short when the principal has on one that is even shorter.

At my son's school the girls can wear gray pants from October-April. The rest of the year they have to wear skirts. The parents know this before they enroll their kids in the school. If they refuse to adhere to the uniform policy, they will have to find another school for the child.

This is a regular public school, not charter or magnet, however no students are "forced"to attend. Everyone is there by choice.

There are tons of rules that are enforced at my son's school that would not fly in most of the public schools around here.

Our school will not allow kids to attend class K-12 if they are breaking the dress code. They will have to wait in the office for a change of clothing.

Ours is pretty realistic for the most part though. No spaghetti straps, skirts and shorts mid thigh or longer. No bare stomachs. Nothing w/ obscenities. Just added 2 weeks ago was no pants/shorts with writing on the bottomside.

They enforced the dress code at my old high school. Some of the rules were so stupid though. I guess I could see how they wouldn't want your rear end hanging out of your skirt or shorts, or how they don't want to see half your belly showing, but I don't get the big deal with showing shoulders. We weren't allowed to expose any part of our shoulders, because God forbid a guy saw a girls shoulder, he'd probably want to go have sex with her. Anyone caught wearing something that was innapropriate, either had to put on something to cover it, or they would receive a school t-shirt to put over it, otherwise they would be sent home. I'm so glad I'm out of high school, because I hate having to wear t-shirts when it's 95 degrees out and no air conditioning in the school.

DD will be going to a charter middle school next year WITH uniforms! Yeah! I'm cheering, she's not. The uniforms aren't bad though....khaki, navy or black shorts, with red, white or blue school polo shirts. Sounds good to me....and yes, it's very much enforced.

Some teachers enforce it; others don't. I'm amazed at what I see at the end of the day and see what a student has worn all day w/o being confronted. Several male teachers do not feel comfortable saying anything to the girls about their cleavage spilling out, bellies being exposed, etc. and can't say I blame them. Of course several of our parent volunteers dress the same way as the students! The boys are pretty good these days, no more baggy pants worn around the hips and very few wear tanks. But the girls...oh my goodness.

I hope some baggy, covered up trend is hot when my DD is in HS!

Our public Elementary school and middle school both have strict dress codes and YES they are enforced. only certain color of shorts are allowed and they cannot have any design on them. Shirts must be certain color polo with collar or school T-shirt. Shirt must be tucked in and if the shorts have belt loops, the kids must wear a belt.
My son thank the good Lord above, is allowed to wear shorts whenever he wants as long as they follow the dress code.

The high school has some rules but they aren't quit as strict, no spaghetti straps, short shorts, baggy pants, hats in school, and flip flops must be at least an inch thick.

Inner-City Public High School (grades 9-12) Dress Code effective 2001-02 school year:
Students will be required to wear polo shirts, turtlenecks, dress shirts or sweaters with dress pants or dress shorts.

In addition, girls can wear skorts, jumpers or dresses as long as they are no more than 3 inches above the knee.

A stricter uniform policy, which detailed acceptable colors for some items of clothing, went into effect during the 2000-01 school year for grades one through eight.

However, disciplinary consequences for dress code violations have not been finalized.

... and other administrators are working on an accompanying discipline policy, which he said could include changing clothes at home or demerits and suspension for repeated offenses.

The school board voted at the beginning of May 2004 to "outlaw" the dress code and allow students to wear jeans and sweat pants again. The HS staff claimed they spent too much time trying to enfore the loosely defined dress code, which pretty much meant no jeans, sweats or t-shirts. The change will be effective for the 2004-05 school year.

Grades 1-8 continue to adhere to a similar dress code with a restriction of color. (Kindergarten was excluded since they only attend half-day classes)
* Pants, skirts and shorts can be navy, khaki or black, must be sized properly, (belts are no longer required if belt loops are present, a change from the first year). Shorts and skirts are to be 3" above the knee or longer.
* Shirts can be white, red, blue (revised in year 2 to allow any shade), or black, with or without a collar (another revision for year 2 as selection of collared shirts was slim and they no longer need to tuck them in).
Students can wear any combination of tops to bottoms.

We have always loosely interpreted the dress code when it comes to shopping. The SD has not actually gone so far as to implement a Uniform Policy - I've inquired on more than one occasion and have been corrected for using the wrong terminology. I usually buy polos, button-down shirts and pants and skirts that "fit" within the guidelines.

DD12 is in 7th grade and would prefer more trendy wares and has worn "inappropriate" clothes. She has either been sent home to change or sat in detention for the day. She knows the rules and repercussions if she fails to follow the guidelines. If she liked the Land's End, Gap or Old Navy looks it wouldn't be a problem for her, but that's not her style.

Yes, they do.

If any of the staff sees something, they tell the student to see an assistant principal. If the asst principal staff sees it, she will give them a school T shirt to wear for the day, and I think a $2 fine. (usage fee for T shirt)

Of course, the school Tshirt is green and really obnoxious, so no one wants that.
