Does your local HS offer Latin?

My SIL teaches Latin at a local HS. Her classes are full and some students can't get in due to high demand. I took 2 years in HS and 2 years in college. A lot of her students do very well on the SATs because of having Latin.

That is strange. It counts as foreign language here. They offer at least 3 years, maybe 4 at the HS's here. Very popular and highly "pushed" as it really does help SAT scores. They have Latin Club and also take trips each summer. I am glad DS is taking it. He is enjoying it and mythology. DD says she is going to take Spanish when she gets to Middle school. We shall see.

Our local high school offers Spanish, French, and Italian. No Latin.

20 years ago when I was in high school they offered Spanish and German only.

The HS I went to offers Latin for 4 years and Greek for 3 years. It was a private Jesuit HS. I don't know if any of the public schools in my area still offer it anymore. They did when I was in HS, but my DSis just started public HS and didn't have it as an option. I took 2 years of Latin, 2 years of Greek and 2 years of German in HS. Latin taught me more English than any English class ever did. I remember that I finally understood when to use who and whom because of Latin class. My kids will each take 2 years of Latin, at least since they will go to private school.

I taught myself enough Russian to get by when traveling there and the next languages I hope to start learning are Italian and Spanish. It'll help when we travel again to S FL and/or Puerto Rico, etc.

I've always been a language buff.

Our HS offers Spanish, French and Latin.

DS is taking Latin and loving it.

The HS I graduated from offers Latin, Spanish, French, and Arabic. I'm not sure about public HS. The one my sister went to did offer it but it might have been cut in the 3yrs since she graduated.

I took Latin throughout high school. We also learned prayers and parts of the mass in Latin in my elementary school.

Yes. DS started in 8th grade. He's in Latin 3 now and will have 5 years and an AP test by the time he graduates. He (as well as we, of course) sees great benefit in it. He took 3 years of Spanish before he started Latin.

My school district is Hampton.

I went to high school in the Deer Lakes district.

At my middle school, everyone took one year of Latin (6th grade) to sort of provide the gateway to the next language. You could then choose Spanish or French for the next two years.

High school didn't offer Latin--but you could choose French, Spanish, German, Russian, Japanese, or Chinese and you had to take it three of the four years.

DS was originally signed up for Spanish by DH while i was away at the World but i talked DS into taking Latin. The latin teacher is fun luckily. There will be many more opportunities to learn Spanish than latin.

We live in Monroeville (Gateway School District) and DS15 is in his 3rd year of Latin. He loves it; what RUDisney said
Latin taught me more English than any English class ever did
is soooo true!

DS13 just started Spanish this year.

Gateway offers Spanish, French, Latin, and maybe Italian (not sure about that one).

DS10 goes to private school with grades from K - 8. At his school, all students K - 6 take Spanish every year. I think this is WONDERFUL to learn a language early. Grades 7 and 8 the students can choose to continue Spanish or take 2 years of Latin. I am hoping that DS chooses Latin as he loves mythology.

DS, 7th grade, is taking Latin. Students MUST take 3 years of one language before changing or adding a different language. DD took 6 years of Spanish (including AP) and 3 years of French. The school also offers German. She then added Japanese in college, continued Spanish, but dropped French.

my 4th grader can take it as an elective this year if he wants. He can't decide between Latin, Spanish, German and French!

I didn't have any choice till high school and it was only french or spanish.

My high school offered Latin and still does. I took 4 years and am so glad that I did.

Many people have the misconception that taking Latin is a waste of time since it’s no longer spoken. However, Latin helps tremendously with vocabulary skills, grammar/syntax skills, and general understanding of language in general. Latin students, generally speaking, have higher SAT scores than students of other languages. My Latin teacher said that he had seen studies that indicated that Latin students scored higher not only on the verbal section of the SAT, but also on the math section due to greater attention to detail.

I do worry that Latin will fall out of popularity in terms of high school foreign language offerings.

I took 3 years of Latin in high school. I really do feel like it helped me on the SAT and ACT. I just graduated in 2003, so I know recently it is still being offered. :)

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'll have to ask the Pine-Richland administration why no Latin is offered.

candykisses, I had forgotten that Gibsonia covered parts of Hampton and West Deer, but the messed up post office system around here always confuses me!

besides, you can learn spanish much easier when you learn Latin.
French too
both are derived directly from Latin

also the kid chose it HIMSELF
