Does your kids school allow this?

Just curious if you kids schools allow parents to come and have lunch with the kids? This is something that DS's school allows and I have to say it is nice every now and then to go have lunch with the kids. I just don't ever remember this happening when I was a kid so I wondered if it is common now a days. (BTW, DS is in elementary school).

Yes, our school system does this up through 6th grade. It is a great opportunity to see them interacting with their friends, and put faces with all of the names they come home with.;)

All the elementary schools around here encourage it.

Elementary does, middle school doesn't. I'm not sure about HS but I don't think my girls would want me there.

Back in the late 70's/early 80's , when we lived in Washington state, our elementary school allowed parents to sign kids out during lunch. I have fond memories of going to a local pizza place during that time. Nothing like being allowed to leave school in the middle of the day :teeth:

I go once a week. I never tell the boys I'm going to show up, and they're always surprised. Tghe best part is, their lunch time is back to back, so I get to see both boys!!!

I had lunch with my daughter on Tuesday. Her 22 month old brother entertained the entire class. They have adopted him as their mascot.

I really miss doing this at our old school. When DD was a baby, we would go every week and eat lunch with DS. I would sometimes surprise him with Mcdonald's or some other treat.

This school district makes you feel like you aren't wanted at the school period!

Thankfully we are moving (PCS/military) this summer. We will be sure to research school district policies better this time.

Our school allows this. It works out very nicely for me because my son's lunch is right before my daughters. On a couple occassions, I've gone up to school and had back to back lunches with my older 2 (I don't eat..just visit) and then went and picked my youngest up at preschool.

I am glad to see so many schools allow this. I think it is great and so do the kids. I hope when we move this summer that where ever we move allows this.

That is not allowed at my daughters school. You can sign them out and take them home for lunch and bring them back but you can't sit there with the other children and have lunch with your kids.

Are you moving away from Italy?

When DS was in elementary school (he's 14 now), and I would volunteer at the school all day, I was allowed to eat lunch with him.

When DS2 got into elementary school the policy changed. They never quite gave me an answer, but I was told that the only time parents are allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria is when a child is disruptive. Very disruptive students are required to have their parents sit with them at lunch for a few days.

So.. in our school it went from a delightful experience to have your parent eat lunch with you to being a punishment.

Go figure.

Why on earth would a school object to a parent eating lunch in the cafeteria? Having been a teacher, I would appreciate any adult eating lunch at the table with my class. I feel that just the presence of extra adults causes kids to tone it down a notch, and boy howdy, those cafeterias need toning down sometimes.

I think it adds to a school's environment to have the three components (parents, students, staff) interacting and feeling comfortable around each other. I can't imagine feeling wanted in a school where I'm not even allowed to sit at a table with my child while they eat lunch.

I would love to know the reasoning behind the decision to keep parents from eating lunch with their kids. (emphasis on THEIR kids)

I used to eat lunch with my daughter at both elementary schools she attended (in different parts of the country). I'd stop and pick up some fast food, eat with her and her friends, and play with them on the playground. She LOVED it. It also gave me a chance to spend more time with her friends that weren't neighbors (and in and out of my house all the time!) and learn about what she did at school.

It was great. I miss it. I don't know if the middle school allows it, but unfortunately I am now too uncool to eat lunch with her!

Yep, the local public elementary schools allow and encourage parents to come by and have lunch. I'm not sure about middle/high schools.

They do at my DD's school and they can have one friend join them for lunch, so it makes choosing hard. They did'nt do that when I was a kid in the 80's.

My DH is a SAHD, and he eats lunch with the girls at elementary school quite frequently. DS is a 7th grader; parents are still allowed. DH has gone a few times but not as often.

At my dd's school (primary) you are allowed to sign up for a couple a days during the year. Each class has different weeks for parents to come but they are not allowed to bring fast food. They can bring a nutritious meal with them just no fast food.

At the elem school I work at it is basically the same although I think they get more days to do this but they still take turns.

At middle school I have never seen any parents eat with their children but at that age the kids get teased so much I guess it is better for them not to come. They do schedule some parents to come and work as monitors to give the regular lunch duty teachers a break every now and then.

It's allowed at our elementaries. I'm honestly not sure about the middle and high schools. It's probably ok as long as they have a guest pass, but the lunchrooms are so incredibly crowded they wouldn't be comfortable.
