Does your kids' high school have a policy against drinking before prom?

DD(16) went to her boyfriend's senior prom this past weekend. Before he could buy her ticket we had to sign, along with DD, a statement saying that no alcoholic beverages would be consumed. Any senior (or guest) caught drinking would have to leave the prom with their parents, face suspension from school and miss their graduation exercises. Well, 43 students got sent home from prom after taking (voluntary) breathalizer tests and failing them.

DD said the headmaster made a 15 minute speech today and threatened the future of next year's prom (very unfair to next year's seniors, IMO). I do, however, agree with the consequences that were doled out to those who chose to drink. I think it sends a strong message for the future.

So, does your kids' high school have any rules in place for such a thing?

I am not sure, as my daughter isn't in high school yet...but when we drove past the high school this weekend, there was a display from SADD -- a pretty red car that had been destroyed in an accident. very visual reminder.

Yes, as does Briar Rose's. No consumption what's so ever. Suspension if rule is broken. all vechiles will be searched at the Prom's location also. After the Prom, anything goes no longer a school function.

Yes. We have a zero tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol. Anyone caught with either (or even drug paraphanalia) on school grounds or at a school function is expelled. It's a controversial policy, but it seems to be the trend around here.

Yes we do. We warn them and warn them and then have a breathalizer and catch a few kids each year. I know they miss some though, and that a lot of kids drink AFTER the prom since we don't have an "afterprom", we have a similar thing after graduation instead.

Our high school has a zero tolerance also at the prom. Last year (my son's prom), the kids were told by letter that they would be checked and parents would be called. Some kids came in and started throwing up (really smart), so the faculty and cops hired for security searched the cars and limos those kids came in and cited the limo companies, too (several thousand $). A friend of my son's said it looked like a middle school dance, with all the parents picking up their kids LOL!

Prom was held on campus this year - I guess that was done to erase any question in the minds of the parents who threatened to sue the school for busting their darling kids for underage drinking at a school function (believe it or not). The kids were not arrested by the police - just their parents were called.

Patch! welcome back!

I suspected we had rules -- but since my dd's are still in middle school i didn't know for sure.

have you seen the SADD car?

DS informs me that YES they have the zero tolerance policy at his school, and when he accompanied a senior to her prom (different school), he and all the others, took a breathalizer before entering. :( Kinda sad, but I feel it's for the best.

Oh yes. Our local high school made the news because a bunch of kids had been drinking before prom (not onsite, just before). The kids who are juniors will have to go to an alternative school for at least 90 days next year (which will really mess up things if they are taking AP classes) and the seniors were prohibited from taking part in the graduation ceremony. Let them explain THAT to the relatives!
