Next year, my 2 oldest kids will both be in the high school (our district doesn't move the kids to the high school building til the 10th grade due to lack of space  ). Anyway, when you choose your course, they are not only for your particular grade. Both my kids have done the same 'majors' in 9th grade and they each plan to continue with it next year (tv production/web design/animation), they will more than likely be in the same class next year!! When you pick your classes at the high school, you will have kids from 10th, 11th or 12th in the same room. :confused3 It hasn't bothered my son this year, but I am NOT too sure he is going to want his sister sitting in the same class as he will be next year..........although, "grade" wise, it might be a good thing...they are HIGHLY competitive!! :teeth:

My high school did this. In fact my Sophomore year, 90% of my classes I took with my sister who was a Senior.

My high school was like that in the early '80's. :confused3 I didn't realize it could be any other way.

I had never heard of this until my son started high school (10th grade) last year. When I was in school, you were only in classes with your grade. Of course, it was a private school so maybe that's why. :confused3 This should make for an interesting few years!! ;)

My HS did this as well. We had no problems with it - but I also never had to worry about a sibling in a class. Hope that goes okay for them. :)

My high school did this, as does my dd's high school. All electives are mixed, core classes have placement based on the student's proficiency (some freshman will have geometry, some will have algebra I).

The high schools I have taught in and attended all did this. There were core classes that were grade specific like 10th grade American History but the math and science classes were mixed grades, mostly 11th and 12th graders because there isn't that much room in the 9th and 10th grade schedules for elective type course. We don't have "majors" here though.

My parents were glad my high school didn't have 9th grade. They didn't have to worry about the senior guys "sniffing" around their 9th grade daughters! :rotfl:

Ditto. Core classes were (for the most part) grade-specific, electives were mixed.

Your son wouldn't like his sister in the same class as he? I had *my dad* for English Lit.!!! :scared:

This is the way it was for me in the early '80s. My kids will experience it as well when they get to h.s.

Gosh, I must of led a sheltered life!!! :scared1: I never heard of this before!!! Of course, seeing how my siblings were 22, 24 and 26 yrs older than me, it wouldn't of even been a remote possibility! :teeth: And NO, Kirk would not like Jeana in his class....another 'perk' for me would be that if either one of them did anything wrong, I would hear about within seconds of them getting home from school.....the "Mom, guess what?!!" phase hasn't begun to end yet! :hyper2:

Yes.....mostly.
The base classes like English are by grade until they go off for specifics.
A lot are basically one class because of the "order" things are taken in, but any elective type thing or the more advanced classes are mixed by interest and prior classes.

::yes::

We could chose courses that were both within our grade level (English, history and social studies) and other classes (languages, math, art, sciences, etc) that would be a mixture of grades. I've never heard of a major in high school. While I understand that high school is the last preparation that some students will get before entering the work force, I think high school should expose kids to a number of different things so that they can figure out their likes and dislikes before moving on. I couldn't imagine deciding what I wanted to do for the rest of my life by the age of 14. I don't think that there are enough life experiences to make that kind of decision.

it's always been this way. There is a limit to how much it happens because generally college prep kids follow a certain route to their classes. Ex. most freshman might take geometry, chemistry, etc. Some classes like english it will almost never happen in exc for electives.

Sort of. Some of our electives were offered up to Soph/Jr/Sr, some grade level only, Some Jr and Sr only. Mostly the electives were grade level specific

I went to high school 25 years ago and the students of all grades were mixed together for elective courses and the same thing happened to my sister when she was in high school 35 years ago.

DD goes to the same school, so yep, when she goes to high school next year (they don't start high school till 10th grade), she'll have the same thing happen. Actually, she'll go over to the high school for choir next semester so she'll be with older kids this year, too, I guess.

We don’t have majors here, so I’m not really familiar with that. All we have here is regular curriculum and college-prep curriculum.

Essentially most of our classes were separated out by grade. However, if you were in honors classes and/or AP classes, you often had kids from older grades in the same class as you. For example, I took honors biology as a freshman (I skipped freshman physical science). There were other freshmen in my class as well as sophomores. Typically the grades were only one level apart (e.g. no seniors in freshman classes). For electives you might find up to 3 grades apart.

My high school was also that way, in 1978-1982. Core classes were same grade level only, but electives were open to everyone. I remember being the only freshman in my Algebra II class.

We didn't have "majors", but yes our classes were mixed. Mostly for our "electives". Otherwise for the required classes it was mostly people in your grade unless someone had to repeat.
