Does your DD play hockey?

Hello :sunny:

My dd has finally decided that maybe she'd like to play hockey (little kids hockey, as she calls it). She is five years old and I had wanted to sign her up in June, as she loves to go and watch the team my brother coaches (big boys). The late registration was in August! So now I think they have three spots open, but I hadn't planned on her changing her mind. It sure is expensive isn't it? It will be over $300 to register (plus a late fee) and then she needs equipment and new skates ... is it worth it?

Does anyone have a daughter that plays hockey? Our league is just house league and is a mixture of boys and girls, with mostly boys playing. She would be in Mytes, which is basically skills with a few games near the end of the season. Girls hockey here doesn't start until they are about 10, as we have such limited ice time in our town to begin with.

I'd love to hear from anyone else that has a daughter playing hockey that isn't strictly girls hockey!

Thanks
Kerri :)

When my son played hockey he had a girl on his team, from Mites, to Squirts... and she was the most respected player on the team!! Maybe it was the coach's attitude, maybe it was just her play - but she played smart, she was good, she played the game from a strategic standpoint - and my ds respected that - she was good, she may not have been a high scorer, but she was where she needed to be, most all the time!!!

Good for her!! I have a friend who's dd is on a hockey team, she's in high school now, I've gone and watched her play a couple of times, girls hockey has improved a lot in ten years!!!

Yes, my DD has played since she was 5. She now plays for her middle school team. Sometimes she is the only girl on the team and other times there are a few girls.

Lots of girls playing hockey in the house league here. Even a few of the moms help out with coaching.

DS 7 plays Mites-house and travel, this season. If your daughter wants to do it, then it's worth it. For me, I can't complain, the kid wakes up at 5 for his 6am games and is ready to go. To me that makes it worth it at any price - DW would disagree but I'm the one coaching and being there with him, so it's pretty much my call.

For equipment you can try ebay - you just need to be careful you don't get smelly equipment. I've gotten DS's skates on ebay...just pay attention to the photos of the blades - if the steel looks like it needs to be replaced then probably not a good deal. (Your brother should know if he coaches).

Otherwise - www.hockeygiant.com or www.peranis.com have great clearance stuff (usually works great since little kids don't know the latest model skate/helmet/glove out) Good Luck!

My kids don't play but we are in Minnesota and a lot of girls do play. Most of the high schools have a girls varsity/jv team. It is an expensive sport to get into and the time commitment as they get older is unbelievable. Usually you can pick up used equipment for the little kids like that for not much. At that age even used skates are not that big of a deal because they don't wear them much and out grow them before they wear them out. I know in our old town for the mites they had a flat fee that covered registration, ice time, and all your equipment except skates. The league owned the equipment and they loaned it out every year.
