Lonnie Donegan, the "king of skiffle" died Sunday (November 3) at the age of 71.

He collapsed midway through a UK tour. Donegan, who had suffered a series of heart attacks, had been complaining of back trouble shortly before falling ill. He was with his wife and son when he died in Peterborough. One of the most successful recording artists of the pre-Beatles era, he had three number one hits and numerous top 10 entries in the UK chart. In the US, he was best known for "Rock Island Line" and "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor (On The Bedpost Over Night)", both top ten hits.

Donegan received an MBE from Queen Elizabeth for his services to pop music in Britain. He had been a big influence on the Beatles (John Lennon was playing in a skiffle band inspired by Donegan, the Quarrymen, when he first met Paul McCartney) and had been due to take part in a tribute concert to George Harrison at the Royal Albert Hall at the end of the month. His last performance was in Nottingham, which was the first city he played as he hit the big time in 1957.

That's too bad. I remember the chewing gum song and my sister and I loved it.

:(

I remember that song too, and I remember thinking it was SO funny that my mom thought it was SO stupid ;)

Anyone who inspired John Lennon to pick up a guitar is a VIP in my book. R.I.P. Lonnie:(
