Does your 5 yr old love Ipod touch or Kindle Fire?

My dd5 loves to play games on her older sisters IPod Touch. I thought about getting her one of her own for Christmas, but then wondered if I shouldnt consider the Kindle Fire. Does your 5 yr old prefer one over the other? This would be mainly for games...she isnt into music yet...but she could always use the Ipod for music later. I want to stay at about $150 so that is why I am considering these two. I can get a refurbed IPod Touch for $149 and I think the Fire is $159. Thanks for any help or insight you can give me.

If you are already in the Apple iPod universe, I would stay there so you don't have to re-buy her games. The new iPod just came out so I assume there should be cheaper refurbished iPods over at Apple or used ones from people selling theirs to get the new one.

My DD9 got an LG Optimus V last Christmas. $50 as a Black Friday deal. We didn't activate the phone; DD just uses it for apps and music.

If you're an Apple family, and have a lot of paid apps that could be loaded on a second Touch, that would be a point in favor of the Touch.

My DD perceived the Optimus as being higher-value than a Touch (which is what she'd originally been asking for). Which unfortunately meant that she's now lobbying for an iPad for this Christmas - it's not significantly higher-value in her eyes than the cheap phone, so she doesn't realize just how much more it would cost.

My 5 yr old DS got a Ipod touch for Christmas last year and LOVES it! He mainly has free game apps on it, but did get a couple of Itunes cards for Christmas that he still has credits from. He uses it for games and such when we're out and about and also uses it for Netflix when we're around a wifi connection (usually at home only or grandparent's house). We've also added a couple of movies from digital downloads to it, that he can watch when we're waiting in line at DW.

We do not have a Kindle Fire, but my DH has a HP tablet that my son uses but not nearly as much as his Ipod. In my opinion, the Ipod is easier for them to carry around.

He does have an otter box case on it and I would recommend getting one or something similar to go with the Ipod, if that is what you decide on.

My friend's niece has had 2 iPod touches and smashed both, she just stepped on her iPad. That's a lot of $ wasted. I wouldn't have trusted DD at a young age with one, she did break her DS. She is 16 and her laptop screen broke mysteriously...luckily DH could fix it and it only cost $80 for the new screen.

My 7yo ds has an iPod touch, which he inherited when was 4. He LOVES it and uses it constantly!

I agree that if you already have apple devices, it's easier to stick with apples.

Ds6 likes his ipod touch a lot. He also plays on my tablet and our iphones as well. We are an apple family and that is the direction I think I would go with a 5 year old.

Please forgive me for hijacking but if a person already has an ipod and an itunes account, can you add more ipods or itouches to the same itunes account and thereby share the music, etc? Thanks.

Have you considered something like the LeapPad that is made for kids? It would be cheaper. Though DD is only 2 and loves to play on my Kindle Fire. It makes me nervous so for Christmas she is getting the LeapPad2.

I can't speak personally. but anytime I vist my Brother the lil one( turned 4 in june) had aunts cell phone, mom's cell phone playing angry birds or some other game. I know he got a kindle last year and wants ipod i guess his mom asked him what color i should get and he said something bout himself getting it not me.

My vote is for the iTouch also. Our boys, 6 and 8, each have one. They use them all the time. We have Otterbox cases. ODS dropped his just today , and it was fine . DH has a Kindle Fire (and his own iTouch), and he is really glad we went with iTouches for the boys rather than getting them Kindle Fires. It doesn't have near the app selection (he has to do something called side-loading apps that he wants which is a pain), and our boys share an itunes account with DH so they get all his apps, plus the ones they buy. --Katie

Grandson got iPad last Christmas when he just turned 4. It has worked out great! We have a Griffin Survivor case on it. Has so many educational apps and of course games and movies. It's amazing what they can do so young! Whatever you get you can protect it with the right case.

DD5 is so careful with her things. She plays with her older sisters Ipod all the time and we have had no issues. Her older sis on the other hand, had cracked her Ipod screen and it is all splintered, but dd5 still plays the games on it. She has the mobigo and I really dont want to get another preschool game unit like the LeapPad.

It all depends on what generation of Ipod touch you get her. If it is a new one, gen 4 or up, you should be able to get them almost anywhere. IE Walmart, Target, etc.

If its an older one Amazon should have one for it.

For instance, the Title Nine warehouse sale where we stood in line for an hour to check out. That was very boring for my youngest and his Ipod was so easy to bring with to keep him entertained.

Yes, my sister shares my account. When I upgraded to the ipad3 she got my ipad2. Rather than her buying all new apps, I just kept the ipad2 on my iTunes account- we have similar tastes in many things, so it works out.
