Does your 14/15 year old ds do this?

Those teen bodies are going through LOTS of changes and growing! I think the sleeping a lot is a result of that.

And I don't have a problem with DS keeping weird hours in the summertime as long as it doesn't interfere with any of his obligations. Sure, the adjustment to school hours might be interesting the first week or so... but now I have Barkley's ice water trick to try if it's a problem! :rotfl:

i've found that using a spray bottle filled with ice water can be effective those first few mornings of school:rotfl2: (dd revealed this method as being employed by camp staff when i marveled at how the counselors at the camp she and her brother attended managed to get him up each morning):thumbsup2

Tee-hee. DS *hates* that one -- and the cold, wet washcloth tactic, too. Works, though.

We have the opposite problem; my ds 13 wakes up too early. I have made a rule that if he gets up before 6am, he needs to go back to bed. I'm pretty sure he breaks the rule most mornings, but I don't tend to get up to check;). His "bed time" is 8:15pm- but he is allowed to read in his room if he isn't ready to sleep. Most nights he is completely out by 9pm.

If we let him, he would. But while we let him stay up to midnight/1 am, during vacation and no marching band, he knows that he will be getting up anywhere from 7 am to 10 am. There is no sleeping the day away.

With 2 a days for marching band going on, DS15, has been climbing into bed 9 to 9:30, with the lights out by 10. His own appointed sleep schedule.

My son reverses his sleep schedule in the summer-up all night, sleeps all day. I'm not such a control freak that I have to 'put a stop to it.' It's normal and because I believe that kids only have once chance at this kind of behaviour, I endorse it.. caveat: as long as daily responsibilities are being taken care of. In this house, 'daily responsibilities include feeding the cat, emptying the trash, lawn care, laundry and summer school work. It's all done here with very little 'encouragement' so I say, 'sleep away darlin!'

This is a 13yo'ds schedule? Seems more like a 7yo type sleep program. why the early bedtime as it obviously encourgages an early rise time.

8:15pm bedtime for a 13yo? Is that of his choosing? No wonder he gets up before 6am.

I will get my DS14 up if he's not awake by 1pm. Not sure how late he would sleep if I didn't wake him up.
He's going to high school this year and the bus comes at 6:20am. That's 2 hrs and 20 min earlier than middle school bus last year. This should be fun.

My 10yo son crashes early and rises early.
But my 13yo daughter could live this way. Very easy.

All of you talking about your boys growing while they sleep have given me an idea. Our son is on the short side and really wants to grow. You've just given me a way to keep him in bed past 5:30 a.m. Thank you, thank you, thank you! And, hey, if he grows, that's good too!!

My oldest is 21 and yes he did the same thing. It wasn't a big issue with us. About two weeks before school started every year we started making him head to bed earlier and start getting up earlier.

As long as he could be the attitude in check on the days during summer that I needed him up earlier than mid afternoon and still got his chores done he was allowed to continue the pattern for awhile.

My son has been sleeping until about 11:00 - noon. But he has also been staying up REALLY late (2:00-3:00 a.m). So I don't think he's sleeping too much. Now that school is going to start soon, I have to force him to shift his hours. Having started cross country this week, should help.

This was my ds14 as well. At the beginning of the summer, he was staying up really late(2-3:00am) and sleeping until about noon, but then he started a 6 week strength and conditioning camp at the high school, and he had to be there at 8am. He was forced to adjust his schedule. Now, he stays up until about midnight and wakes up very early for football practice.

Sleeping isn't our issue....his new thing is weight lifting.....if he isn't weight lifting, he is eating!

IS it possible your son is a vampire? You should check to see if he has a reflection...or at least see if he sparkles in the sunlight...

My son is 16 and he does the same thing. He is sleeping now. At 4 am this morning, I got up to use the restroom and he strolled by me and gave me a quick hug and said "love you, goodnight". By 2 this afternoon, we will probably start trying to get him up. There is no reason to stress it. In my medical classes, we learned that most teens have different circadian rhythm than every one else. They are biologically more inclined to stay up later and sleep later. There is a huge movement to try and push the starting time of many high schools due to this fact. It can be so annoying and worrisome; however, the teens are really just doing what their body is telling it to do.

This cracked me up for some reason, because this happens at our house too. Honestly, the only rules I've had to enforce is that they can't be baking (yes....baking) after we go to bed. I have been awakened at 3 am to the smell of freshly-baked cookies or cinnamon rolls way too many times this summer.

So you see, even if they are sleeping all day, they can still be productive at night. I admit that I enjoyed a fresh pastry with my morning coffee, thank you very much.
:laughing::laughing:

OMG, that's GREAT!! My DS15 can barely make cereal! :rotfl:

I think it's all part of being a teenager. :goodvibes Been there, done that, and I expect it out of my kids at that age.. lol :lmao:

Yes, teens do need lots of sleep to support all that growing. My DS grew about 5 inches in the past year, and is now about 6'4". This summer he is staying up at night until 11:00 to 12:00, and usually sleeps until between 10:00 and noon, unless he is forced to get up and go to work earlier. His internal clock really wants to go to bed later and get up later. The school year is so hard for him. Although he is to be in bed at 10:00, he often complains of tossing and turning and not falling asleep until much later. He then is exhausted to wake up at 6:10 am to get really for school. The school year is brutal for so many teens; so many would benefit from, and do better in school, with a later start time.

:goodvibes I have been awakened to the smell of popcorn. My dogs love these 3am snacks...they go running.

I agree...I was so disappointed to find out that our school district passed an earlier start time. Our teens now have to be at school at 7:20am....I am half afraid to find out what time they will have to be there if they have morning activites before school.

Does anyone else's 14 or 15 year old son sleep constantly? Since we got back from our summer vacation 3 weeks ago, ds has been sleeping until 3 p.m.! :scared1::confused3:lmao: He's my first born and I grew up in a family of all girls. He'll rouse for dinner and be up past midnight, but man, he's comatose during most of daylight. :rotfl:

I have a couple of male relatives/friends who tell me they did the same thing. I'm feeling that I should just put him in a box with some food for the next six months. The start of school sure ain't going to be pretty.

When I was that age, my parents made me get up when they did. Mom would give me a short list of chores and let me know the day was mine when they were finished. No TV, video games or sleeping until they were done.

I thought it worked well and taught me to get up and get going and not be a sloth. On Sundays I would sleep in until 10 and loved it....
