Does you child's school have "rations"?

My boys' school asked parents to send in gallon water jugs & individual serving snacks to keep on hand in case the kids cannot leave. I am glad that they have a plan. I had been wondering about that & was going to suggest this to the principal - apparently someone else was thinking the same thing. I don't consider it just in the event of a national emergancy. With all of the snow that we have had recently, it is possible that a weather emergency could make it so that parents could not get to school.

No they don't. If I was given a request like that, I'd be very curious as to why exactly they would need the rations. Did they explain why?

In Southern California at my daughter's school every child most definitely has an EARTHQUAKE KIT which parents provide at the beginning of the school year. We can actually purchase them through the PTA at my daughter's school. They contain water, dehydrated food and other emergency items.

It's been discussed in my county as well (Montgomery County, Maryland). From what I understand the schools are trying to keep an extra couple of days worth of food just in case the kids are locked down. We haven't been asked to send in water and whatnot, but I'm sure that's coming. I'm in favor of it completely.

We've talked to DS about the possibility that the children will be kept in school in the event of an emergency. It'll probably never happen but I don't want him to panic if it does.

Our schools here have been doing earthquake kits for years. Just the elementary and middle schools. Since the schools bring in meals each day and heat them there is not a real kitchen with food supplies on site. We had a storm quite a few years back here in a couple schools some students and staff had to spend the night and it made everyone think about what if we had a natural disaster such as a earthquake. In the grade schools they suggest putting a family picture in the earthquake kit to comfort young children if needed.

I had fun torturing my 9 yr old this morning. (That is why people have kids, right?) The forecast is for dropping temperatures with rain turning to a wintry mix & possibly snow by this afternoon. DS heard snow & immediately thought - no school (as if 9 snow days weren't enough!) I reminded him of the ratiions & joked that he might have to spend the night. His reaction was priceless. (Don't worry, he wasn't tramtized - it was more of a "gottya" from Mom.)

Emergency kits here too. Not only could they be needed for an earthquake, but for stranger lockdown, unexpected snow etc. A snack could go a long way to soothe a child who unexpectedly had to stay at school due to an emergency. Several years ago I remember a school not too far away being on lockdown until dinner time due to a swat-team situation going on nearby.

We have major emergency plans in place with Earthquake drills twice a year. The classrooms have each child's emergency kit plus we have a large outside storage container near the playground that has extra supplies. The teachers are all divided into emergency teams and know their emergency jobs - they have twoway radios and everything. It seems like overkill, but if the big one comes I'm glad to know they're prepared to account for all the kids and keep them safe and comforted!

Our school has never done anything like this but we do have a full kitchen in the premises, I don't know how much food they store though.

Once you explained about the school days and not for a "national emergency", I think that is a great idea! Better to be prepared. For those with the Earthquake kits, I had never thought of that, but makes perfect sense of course!
