Does US have/Does Canada have...?

Oh, believe me, I know I'm not getting full exchange value.

I had to laugh though, when my car was broken into during my senior year at school ... my cd player was taken (that kinda hurt), but they also emptied the contents of my change drawer, which was, at that point in time, probably about 70% CDN currency. Almost nowhere in the US will take CDN currency (except maybe quarters, which I didn't have any of in the change drawer), so the thieves got about $5 in loose change that they couldn't use.

Yes, the US has Curling. Not as widespread as it is in Canada, but we have it here.

Did CBC really show "Movie Night in Canada" in place of "Hockey Night in Canada" during the NHL lockout?

Does Canada have amusement parks like Walt Disney World (though we know Disney itself has no park there, YET).

Poutine is french fries with cheese curds on it, then gravy on top! (yes, really!)

Canada invented it!
Um...yeah. That's because I don't think any other countries were trying that hard.

Does Canada have any places that do NOT accept US currency?

Not Canadian, but I can answer this with a resounding YES!!! I once paid almost $10 for a pint of Ben & Jerry's at a convenience store in Windsor because they didn't take $ and I was desperate enough to pay a BAAAD exchange rate!

Does Canada have its own stock market?

Oh yes, the US has Canada Dry! :)

Sandy22, thanks for the picture! Milk in a bag. Never would've thought.

Thanks Nance for clarifying. I'd still bungle it. I'm sure. :)

I've heard it's more Canada has a strong film industry. Didn't hear about where celebs go though.

Do Canadians care about the comings and goings of celebs like the US does?
Do they have magazines about celebs and such?

Does the US have the sport of curling?

Um, I've never considered curing your hair a sport, but then again, our young girls spend HOURS doing it. :rotfl:

Unless you're talking about weight lifting, I don't think we do. In weight lifting, doing curls is more than likely part of that sport.

The sport of Curling can best be compared to shuffleboard on ice. It's a kind of interesting sport to watch. Difficult to do well.

We have A&W in MN and Dairy Queen was started here. I grew up in So Cal though and DQ was hard to find there. They probably don't have one in Anaheim.

Does Canada have Target stores?

This thread is fun!

Oh, and what is the deal with health insurance there?

No Target stores - yet. I heard a couple of months ago they might take over Zellers though.

One can get heath insurance to supplement what is covered by the government in your province. So doctor's visits, hospital visits, xrays, lab tests etc are covered by the province. What the government covers is varies from province to province.

Our private insurance covers prescriptions, dental (although my five-year-old in covered by the province) differential between ward and a private hospital room, etc. Some things - physotherapy, for example - the province pays for if they happen at a public facility, but private insurance will cover a private clinic which usally has a shorter waiting list.

If you don't mind me asking, is the wait to see a doctor generally a long one?

Sometimes here in the US, if you need to see a specialist you are looking for quite a wait.

Never heard of it.

I like this thread, we're all getting educated!

Does Canada call soccer, soccer, or is it called football there? Is there such as a thing as "American Football" in Canada?

Yes, we are interested in US celebrities. Our checkouts are full of magazines like People, In Touch, US Weekly. I love to read them!
No Target stores yet, but yes to WalMart. We also have the Real Canadian Superstore, which is like Walmart, but with full grocery. Most of our Wal-marts don't have full grocery, just dry goods and an isle of dairy, and one of frozen-no fruits and veggies etc..
Yes, we have Lindt chocolate-love it!
Toronto has a Paramount Wonderland-which is a big amusement park, I think it is characters like spiderman, Nicolodeon characters etc.. (correct me if I am wrong) I live in Alberta-we have Calaway Park in Calgary. It is a good sized amusement park with rides, shows, mini-golf, a fishing pond etc... our kids really enjoy it.

Does the US have Kraft Dinner mac and cheese?

Yes to Kraft mac and cheese!

Is Canada seeing a rise in immigrants? Here in the US we have signs to accomodate those that speak Spanish. Do you have a need for that as well?

ETA- The signs aren't prevalant per se. Instructions on most products and business phone recordings offer Spanish and English.

P.S.- Does Canada have Corporate phone recordings? Like when you call to a company or Dr. office do you have to follow instructions according to a pre-recorded message? It drives this one person nuts! I like to speak to people!!

This is poutine:

Does the US have Harvey's fast food?

Here's a picture of curling. It's now an Olympic sport so recognition should be picking up.

In general, I don't think Canadians have the same fascination with celebreties as Americans do. A lot of celebs come to Canada to escape. Unless they are a boy-band, they can usually walk around in public without being hassled.

I've never had to wait more than a couple of days to see our family doctor for something non-urgent. Any time I've called and said it was urgent we got an appointment same day or early the next day (if I called in the evening). I'd say my extended family have had similiar experiences.

It's harder to judge specialist wait times though. My guess would be pretty significant wait times for anything non-urgent. My sister had a heck of a time getting a cardiologist appointment last year, but I think the guy she was refered to was pretty flaky and in the end she found out they'd lost her file or something. That's the only serious specialist referral that I remember being excessively long.

No Harveys that I know of, not in the midwest to be sure! What in the world is on those fries?

Sandy- how was Freedom Fest? Do you live close enough to the border with Detroit to even know about it?

Great pictures Sandy22!

I can usually get in the same day to see my family doctor, but specialists usually take a few monthes. My hubby had to wait 6 monthes to get a MRI on his knee. That way it is free. If he wanted to pay a privat clinic, he could have done it for about $800 I think it was.

Does the US have Big Turk bars?

YES and our family wouldn't be able to survive without it (generic doesn't compare)!!! We also have Velveeta mac and cheese too, but I've never been a fan.

In towns across America we have little mart type stores. A quick store to run in and pick up soda, candy bars, cigarettes, chips. Some stock more household items than others, like pain medication, bread, that type thing, newspapers and magazines, etc... Most have their own food selection available. Some make Pizza, subs, steak sandwiches, that type thing (though they're not really a deli). Turkey Hill is one we have in PA and they've marketed their own ice cream (and it's really good). I think they all sell gas too and they're prices are cheaper than the privately owned stores, so most of those have gone out of business. At least they have for the most part in my state. Some names in Pa include, Turkey Hill, Sheetz, Uni Mart, Mini Mart, Wa Wa, Martin's. They are ALL franchise type stores. Nothing like the mom and pop stores (though we have those too). Does Canada have these type of little marts?

I seen recently that Sheetz is now doing a drive thru. You drive up, order your soda, and what not without even getting out of your car.

We don't have the same problems of illegal immigration (probably just because we don't border anyone but Americans). Legal immigration is controled by the gov't and has been steadily rising as Canadians are having smaller and smaller families. In Canada, we have 2 official languages, French and English. In many areas of the country you'll see bilingual signs with French and English. We are a very diverse nation - I think the projected stats for the very near future are one in five will be a visible minority. We don't have problems with immigrants not wanting to learn English or French.

Yes we have corporate phone messages! Drives me nuts!!!
