Does this poncho make me look fat?!?: An Aug '12 dining report *Updated 9/11*

Just jumping aboard your thread. Looks great and some yummy choices. We just came back from Disney with the DDP and interesting to see what we missed and what we hit up same as you :)

Thanks for joining in!! I see you have a dining report for the same time... I will be heading over to check it out. I love your title! We had some chicken nugget love going on too this trip! ;)

I stayed at POR last July for five nights, and I'm a little sorry I missed out on Boatwright's. We were planning to eat there one night, but when some friends who live in Orlando decided to join us that night, my sister wanted to take them to Beaches and Cream instead.

Btw, I just subscribed and am looking forward to reading the rest of your reviews!

Welcome, so glad to have you along! Sorry you missed out on Boatwright's but I have good reviews of Beaches and Cream. We have talked about staying at Beach Club in two years and that is one restaurant my DH talks about trying. I think the Sundaes are calling to him...:rotfl:

Joining in! We went to Disney for a week of our honeymoon in 1996 too!!

Thanks for hopping on board!! I see you went last year for your 15th anniversary. We did too!! We went in September without the kids. It was great but we just couldn't wait to go back with the kids, thus our Aug trip this year.

Enjoy!

The Mr. has a large, New Orleans family, and looooves good cajun food. I suppose we must add this to our "to try" list.

Day two for us was EMH at Magic Kingdom. So we were up bright and early and off to the bus stop. We didn’t quite make rope drop, but we were close!! We relied on granola bars and fruit snacks from the room to cover breakfast and just kept going til lunch time.

We had pretty much planned out most of our counter service lunches ahead of time. We did change it up a couple of times. I know that seems awfully structured, but traveling with 3 kids it is so much easier to say “we are eating here because this is how we planned it”. Otherwise, I find that I get three different opinions and someone winds up griefing about it.:rolleyes2 So, for today the plan was Cosmic Ray’s!!!

DD ordered the Turkey sandwich with cucumber salad on the side. She ordered water to drink and the triple chocolate cake for dessert. DS11 ordered the same sandwich, only with fries, diet coke and the chocolate cake for dessert. The sandwich came with turkey and cheese on a roll, and then they both went up to the fixins bar and loaded them up with tomatoes, lettuce and pickles. Strangely they both like mustard on their subs??:confused3
Let me just say, this sandwich was huge!! Both DS and DD loved their choice. They said the sandwich tasted very fresh and neither could finish the whole thing. DS did manage to finish his fries and most of his cake. DD ate half her sandwich and her cake. I tried the cucumber salad and it was very good. It had cucumbers and onion and a sweet vinegar dressing on it.

DH and I both had the Bacon Cheeseburger. He had his with fries and I had grapes with mine. We both ordered a bottle of water for our dessert. We tried to do this as often as possible so we could save it for later on. The cheeseburger seemed to hit the spot for both of us.

DS6 had the chicken nuggets with fries, coke and chocolate cake for dessert. He ate really well. To be fair, those nuggets are actually pretty good! I have to say I did snitch one or two on occasion.

Cosmic Ray’s is a great choice for our family. If you haven’t been in there, it is set up pretty neat. There are three different “bays”, one for burger, one for chicken and one for sandwiches. Each bay seemed to have a many choices as any other one counter service may offer. So, it makes it easy to please everyone at once without having to run around and meet up. The food here is fresh and tastes good. The fixins bar is well stocked. We all thought the fries were good, they were hot and crispy and when it comes to fries isn’t that the most important thing??? :thumbsup2 The desserts were just the prepackaged cakes, but they always seem to just satisfy that need for a little something sweet. Nothing gourmet about them, but sometimes keeping it simple is just as delicious! :goodvibes

Coming up…dinner at Kona Café….

/
After lunch, we went through the Main Street Confectionary and got a great surprise. pixiedust: The cast members gave each of the kids a rice krispie treat ball !!! That was really cool. My DD and I shared hers right away and DS11 took his back to the room and we ate it a few days later.

After a break at the resort, we took the MK bus and then walked to the boat dock to take the boat over to the Poly for our ADR at Kona Café. We were very excited for this ADR! DH and I ate here last year on our anniversary trip and enjoyed it very much. We kind of prefer it to O’hana. We love the atmosphere at the Poly as well, it is a goal of mine to stay there on a future trip. For now, I have to be satisfied just taking in the beauty of the lobby, shopping in the shops and eating there!!:goodvibes

We checked in about 15 minutes early for our ADR, they gave us a pager and beeped us at our exact reservation time. Can’t really complain about that.

The kids went up and checked out the desert area and took a picture of the Lilo and Stitch sculpture.

Our waitress came over and took our drink orders. DS11 and DD ordered the mega berry smoothies as those are included as a drink choice on the DDP. I had pomegranate lemonade, DH had iced tea and DS6 had chocolate milk ( which he ordered pretty much everywhere we went!! ) Our drinks and bread came out pretty quick and we ordered.

DD ordered the Chef’s Special. She had pot stickers for her appetizer, which we all shared, Coconut-Almond chicken and Kona Coffee Panna Cotta for dessert. The deal was that DH would order the Kona cone and they would swap desserts. The pot stickers were pretty good. About the same as the ones they serve at O’hana. There were 4 of them, so we each had 1 except for DS6. DD really liked the coconut almond chicken, it had a nice crunch to it, but was still moist inside. This was served with a green salad that had asian greens, fresh fruit and almonds. She ate about half of the chicken and salad and was full. I tasted the salad and it was excellent. The dressing was sweet and the greens were very fresh. As for the Kona cone, what’s not to like? Ice cream, cotton candy and mm’s? Yeah, we got a winner!!!

DH had the Ginger crusted Rib eye cooked medium with mashed potatoes and snap peas. He said that this was very good. The rib eye was cooked perfectly and had a nice flavor. The ginger was not too overpowering. He ate the Kona Coffee Panna Cotta, he said it was good and glad he tasted it, but overall is not that impressed with their dessert choices.

DS11 ordered the Teryaki steak with French fries and mashed potatoes and a Kona cone for dessert. He ordered his steak medium rare and really liked it. This was new for him to order steak done this way and he was hooked. Not my cup of tea, but hey I wasn’t eating it!! He almost ate all his steak and a few bites of his potatoes and fries. I do believe he was able to finish his Kona cone!! Big surprise right? :upsidedow
100_0924.jpg

DS6 had chicken noodle soup for his appetizer, baked chicken strips entrée with fries and fruit salad for dessert. I ordered a Kona cone and swapped desserts with him!! He barely touched the soup. That is not to say it was not good. I tasted it and it was good as far as chicken noodle soup goes. He just was not himself when eating this trip…he did eat a couple of the chicken strips and some of the ice cream in his cone and a few bites of cotton candy.
100_0925.jpg

I had the Teryaki steak meal as well however, I ordered mine with mashed potatoes. They brought out rice in error and then my potatoes, so I had both. I took a few bites of each, just a taste, so that I could eat all my steak!! That steak was the reason Kona Café is a must do for me!!! And it did not disappoint….It was so delicious. Great teryaki flavor and so tender. I would definitely go back just for this!

We all enjoyed our meal here. The Kona cones were a huge hit with the kids. The atmosphere is so nice here and our server was great until the end of our meal. Then she kind of kept rushing past us and we were very ready to go. I think one of her other tables had a complaint and she was trying to fix something for them. So, not really her fault. This in no way affected how much we loved this meal!!! :grouphug:

Coming up…Breakfast at Riverside Mill and Lunch in the World Showcase

Breakfast: Riverside Mill

100_0937.jpg

DD and DS11 used snack credits to get muffins for breakfast at the Riverside Mill which is the food court at POR. Tasty as far as muffins go.

Lunch: Epcot Center - World Showcase

We decided to split up to get lunch at different countries and then meet up to eat together. I’m sorry, I did not get pictures of much from this meal.

DS6 and I got our meals at La Cantina de San Angel. DS6 had the Tacos de Carne. These were beef brisket tacos served on corn tortillas and tortilla chips on the side. I had the Nachos, which were tortilla chips with beef, nacho cheese, tomatoes, jalapenos and black beans. We had mild salsa and pico de gallo on the side. We had sodas to drink and churros for dessert. This was a very disappointing choice. DS did not care for his tacos or churros and wound up just eating some chips and salsa. I tasted the tacos and they were actually very good, just not what he was expecting. My nachos were just okay. They were pretty much the same that you could get at any chain Mexican restaurant. I only ate half and felt kind of “bleh” afterward. The churros were very chewy, only ate one.

DS11 chose Lotus Blossom Café and had the Orange Chicken with steamed rice and a cinnamon apple egg roll for dessert. He really enjoyed his meal. There was a lot of chicken and the sauce was very tasty, I snitched a piece of chicken to try. The rice was just rice, but he loves steamed rice with soy sauce, so this was good for him. He did not like the cinnamon apple egg roll, however. DD tried it and said it was very good.

DH and DD decided to eat at Kringla Bakeri Og Café in Norway. (I was so jealous that I did not chose this!!!) DH had the Ham, Apple and Cheese sandwich, toasted with a green salad and an Almond Sweet Pretzel and Diet Coke to drink. DD had the Roast Beef with cheese and tomatoes toasted, a green salad and a chocolate sweet pretzel with a Voss water to drink. They both loved their meals. The sandwiches were very large and so were the pretzels. DD and I wished we had shared her meal, she only finished half of her sandwich!! This is definitely a must do for me next time. We met up here to eat and the outdoor patio was nice as it is covered and shady.

We enjoyed splitting up and having a variety of foods, but we would maybe try to share different foods next time.

I really like trying the counter service in World Showcase. We usually stop at a couple places like the bakery in France or Yorkshire County Fish Shop and split some dishes for lunch. We have yet to try Kringla Bakeri though and your review makes me want to try it during our next trip :thumbsup2

Is the cinnamon apple egg roll at Lotus Blossom Cafe anything like the old McDonald's apple pie back in the good ole days when it was fried?

It looked similar, but I did not taste it...I was busy picking at DD's chocolate pretzel!! ;)
