Does the Nook Color live up to the hype?

Well, I got the NC first for xmas and when I discovered I couldn't actually read it outside well (even on the night setting), I ordered a refurbished e-ink Nook and use that almost exclusively for reading now. I am at soccer games and baseball games too often to have to fight the glare of the sun to be able to read.

So, what is it you are most interested in doing with your Nook? Yes, magazines on the NC look cool, but of the 4 or so single issues I've bought, they have been filled with advertisements. I suppose paper magazines are as well but I didn't notice how many until I had to flip thru all the pages of ads on my NC. I am too chicken to root the thing for fear I will disable it so I'm waiting for B&N to give me some applications.

I saw on ebay today that they are selling refurbished NC now from the BN ebay store for $224 - personally, I don't think that is enough of a discount for a refurbished but others may want to consider it.

I really wanted a Nook color -- it just seemed so flashy and cool and, well, colorful! Then I sat down and really thought about it long and hard, and it dawned on me that there was nothing the NC could do that my Galaxy S phone couldn't already do. And I don't really read magazines. I also read reviews that said reading a book for an extended period was much harder on the eyes than it was on one of the e-ink readers, and that the glare was much worse.

I realized that what I really wanted to do was read books, comfortably and easily. I wanted to be able to go on our next cruise without half a suitcase being taken up by paperback books, lol. I lucked out and got one of the $79 refurbished b&w Nooks, and LOVE it. Seriously love it. It's sooooo easy on the eyes to read for hours, the battery life is great, and I still have wi-fi web access if for some reason I don't want to use my phone. I think my favorite feature (which I'm sure is available on the NC as well) is the built-in music player. I loaded some of my own music on there, and it was pure bliss this long weekend to sit outside and read with Vivaldi softly playing in the background and a glass of wine in hand. :cloud9:

The NC is a lot of $$... I would just make sure that you would really use it often for the features that make it different from the b&w Nook.

For nook colors they just released an update this morning... woohoo we can add angry birds and others apps

Wow - their Angry Birds app is $2.99!!!! It's 99cents or free everywhere else.

I'm keeping my WiFi off and not applying the update until I see whether or not it's possible to have the update and keep it rooted.
