does reserving at your home resort at 11 months limit your chances at the 7 months?

If I make a ressie at my home resort at 11 months, does it limit your changes at to change to a different resort at 7 months or am I better waiting? If I switch resorts midway, and one comes through and the other does not, do they call you and let you make another choice?

If you book at your home resort at 11 months you have your vacation locked in. At 7 months you can switch to another resort or go on a wait list if nothing else is available. The wait list can be confirmed (if it comes through for you the switch is made) or call first (they call to see if you still want it -- but I believe they only give you 24 hours to call back and confirm -- after they move to the next name on the list).

Agree with Jim.

Availability at non-home resorts has nothing to do with availability at your home resort.

The only issue you may have at the 7 month window is dependent on your points - many do not have enough points to hold both reservations, so as they get a day at the non-home resort, they cancel the corresponding day at the home resort. You may not end up with all days at the same resort after those first calls. Most in that situation use the waitlist and if you get on the waitlist at 7 months, chances are very good it will work for you more often than not (but no guarantees, of course).

Best wishes -

so, is it really taking a chance on reserving at the 11 month at 1 home resort, then at 7 months requesting at 2 resorts because the request may be too difficult to have happen at the same time? (the 2 resort thing)? In other words what happens if I reserve at my home resort then at 7 months I want to stay 3 nights at BCV then 4 nights at WVL, what happens if only the request comes through for WVL, not BCV, what happens then?

No, actually I believe that if you want to stay 3 nights at BCV and 4 nights at VWL, as in your example, you actually have a higher chance of having one of those match since you're looking for a smaller number of continuous-nights-at-one-resort.

If you can only get 4 nights at VWL, then you would just modify your home resort reservation, and stay 3 nights at your home resort, and 4 nights at VWL. It's as simple as that. ;)

I will assume that your home resort is not VWL and not BCV.

If you reserve your home resort at 11 months (let's say it's SSR for the example), you know you have a place to stay.

At 7 months, let's say you are unable to get the first 3 nights at BCV (and so ask to be waitlisted). You are able to get the last 4 nights at VWL, so you have MS cancel the last 4 nights at SSR and reserve the VWL nights.

Now you have the first 3 nights at SSR and the last 4 at VWL. If the waitlist for BCV doesn't come through, you just stay at SSR the first 3 nights.

You only commit points when you actually make the reservation - no points are needed to use the waitlist.

There are two ways to use the wailist - be sure to tell MS which way you want to go.

First way is auto confirm. If day(s) become available, MS automatically reserves for you and sends you a confirmation letter.

Second way is to have MS call you when something comes trough - I recommend this if you have a back up DVC ressie that you need to cancel to make the "waitlist ressie ". MS calls you and you can say yes or no at that time to accepting the waitlist day(s). If you aren't home and have a message machine, MS gives you until close of business next day to call back. (Not sure if they try more than once if you don't have message system). When you talk to MS you can cancel the old ressie to get points to make the new ressie.

Risk in using the waitlist is if you ask to waitlist for individual days - it's possible they won't all come through and then you might have to move back and forth more than you want to do. You can waitlist for all the days to come through at once, but your chances of getting what you want are less this way - MS will not hold a day for you while waiting for other days to become available.

HTH and doesn't confuse you even more.
