Does poor grammar or word usage bother you?

I worked with a guy who used "where" for "were". As in, there where many apples on the table. And we wrote reports for our job!!!

See I'm the opposite. Spoken ones bother me way more than written mistakes. Mistakes like they're, there, their and to, too, two almost never bother me. I figure it was just a typing brain fart and since I can understand what they meant I don't care.

Me too, I can let the written things go-especially on a board like this. However, I can often be heard shouting corrections to the anchors on TV!

"It's Athlete, not Ath-A-lete!!!" (that one makes me nuts)

YES!! I have a degree in English and it drives me cra-zay!! :headache:

IMO, it makes people look un-educated when they use improper grammar.

Ugh, yes, I get so annoyed when people use poor grammar! I've gotten annoyed just reading this thread!

My main "grrr" usages are supposubly, golf (for gulf), and axe (for ask). :headache:

It gets to me when it's really bad. Or when I'm in a bad mood already. ;)

I work with a very diverse group of people
Over 1/2 the people I work with, English is their second language.
When these people make mistakes, it does not bother me because they are doing so much better with our language than I would be with theirs
However, one person I work with who is American born, massacures English.
She uses phrases like
We aint got none
He brung me some stuff
I could go on and on
ARGHHHHH
I make a lot of typing mistakes, because my typing skills stink
But I try very hard to use correct words in speaking
I can't even think in terms of we ain't got none

I just thought of another one that makes me absolutely cringe...All Y'all. Now not only is it redundant, but it just sounds horrendous and Y'all is in no way a word!

It gets to me at times. I'm living in the wrong state for poor grammar to bother me, but it really does. If I hear someone else say "We had went to Walmart" in my office, I think I may scream.

Or using the wrong word:

"There was a wreck on the interstate and the cars ended up in the medium."
No, the word is median!

"They took to garbage to the landfield." No, the word is landfill.

"i don't want to be held reliable." No, the word is liable.

I honestly could go on for pages. Please add some of your favorites.

Unfortunately Photobob,

I'm probably public enemy #1 for killing grammar. Language arts was probably my absolute worse subject through h.s., college, graduate school and now as an adult.

I've been thinking about taking a writing composititon class at my local cc for fun, maybe it will help me bone up on the fundementals.

drives me nuts. using the wrong word such as principal/principle or accept/except or sequence/sequins really gets me.

spoken bad grammar is worse than written to me. my DFIL has horrible grammar. He frequently makes statements along the lines of:

"When we was in Colorado we seen 3 bears."

Like fingernails on a chalkboard to me!!!!

There are two misused words that I see here over and over and they drive me completely batty. I don't generally point them out for fear of being labeled the grammar police but since you asked, here goes!

When someone says that a situation has changed and therefore the original point at issue has become mute - there is no such thing as a mute point. (How can you make a point without talking about it?) The point becomes moot.

When someone is talking about tightening the budget strings and states that they are making due with what they have. You are not making due - you are making do.

There, I feel better - thanks!

Susan

Yeah, some things really bother me, like obvious misspellings of words, mixing up words like "to", "too," and "two," and blatant gramatical errors.

:rotfl: LOL. . I used to work at a bank. The branch manager, who was also a VP, used the words "Valentimes" and "Bidness." Drove me nuts! I could never figure out how she rose in the ranks when she couldn't even use proper language!:confused3

My husband also has trouble with the word "Chimney." No matter how hard he tries, it comes out "Chimbley!" lol

His mom says "Valentimes" as well. . . and the most annoying: Death, instead of DEAF! :rotfl2:

I have one that drives me nuts, but I have never and would never correct someone on the usage if they've experienced it. When people are away from their homes and another person breaks in and steals things, the homeowners tend to say "We were robbed!" Technically, they were not robbed - they were burgled.

Like I said, I'd never ever correct someone on their word usage in this type of situation. I cringe a little inside when I hear it, but their violation feels the same whatever you call it.

The whole their, they're, there thing drives me nuts, too. :)

Prolly and woolah/walah (instead of voila) bug me.

I will not hire someone who cannot speak correctly.

Dropping the "g" - ie fixin', goin' - will get you kicked out of my office.

Oh my, yes, this kills me! Lately I've been hearing lots of people saying "simular" when they mean "similar," and it absolutely drives me up a wall. I can't take it! I also get bugged when people say "I was mad.." animals get mad, people get angry (or so my 7th grade social studies teacher taught us).

No.

English isn't my first or even my second language, so I tend to be the one making odd word choices.

I think it's funny to joke about (as in the phrases that annoy you thread), but not always the best way to measure intelligence.

The one I see a lot on this board is the confusion between phase and faze.
You go through a phase.
When something unexpected happens it doesn't faze you.

This is definitely very admirable, and it doesn't bother me if someone makes an odd word choice, etc. I wish I could speak 3+ languages, what an achievement. I'm learning Italian, but still nowhere near fluent.

It usually really gets to me when it's certain people. I had one professor two semesters ago who had a doctorate and took points off of papers for spelling/grammar issues, but constantly used the word "simular" instead of "similar." It's just small little things that bother me in that way!

It bothers me when my 4th grader is working on a current event and the grammar/spelling in our local paper is so bad that DD can find it and identify it. That bugs me.

It bugs me when news anchors come across as illiterate idiots.

It bugs me when a teacher or some other "instrument" of education has poor skills. My DD's 4th grade teacher is super smart when it comes to literature, science and social studies but the poor gal can't hardly add 2+2. She told me outright that she often gets stuck when the class is going over their math and has to wait to consult with another 4th grade teacher:confused3 She sends home printouts that she has no clue how to do herself etc.

As for in speaking and places like here, it doesn't bug me. I notice certain things like the use of irregardless (for some reason that one really bugs me) and I notice when words are misused but I don't get myself all twisted over it and I would never think to correct it.
