Does OKW look old??

I would not say it looks old overall...you just may end up with a room that is poorly maintained with furniture and tiles that need to be replaced. Here is the thread I wrote that listed everything that was wrong with our room during the last week in February: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1737223&page=1&highlight=
On the other hand, you may get lucky and end up in a refurbished room and it may be lovely.

You know where OKW shows it's age the most???

I was thinking the teal tile. I got married (for the first time) the year OKW was built, and my bridesmaids dresses were that shade of teal. Its very late 80s.

That might be, but it's also very true Carribean colors which is true to the Key West theme.

When we did the Disney Cruise and stopped in Key West.. the girls said "This town looks like our hotel"

Some say OKW lacks in theme... but now that I have seen Key West, I truly appreciate how wonderfully themed it is.

okw does rehabs consistantly as i have seen since becoming a member in 1995.
it is relaxing, very much like a private gated community condo anywhere in fla. only much better managed.
we love it, my cousin has been my guest there and loves it. OKW is a true vacation destination. you can vacation there and not even need to do the disney park thing. (although we usually do)

Teal, coral, seafoam green, seashell pink...these are south Florida colors. There is nothing "outdated" about them there!

We just came back from our first stay at OKW, got back on Sat. morning. We were thrilled with the resort and I was also worried about it looking "old" as I had read many negative threads.

I am not sure if our villa had been thru a recent rehab as I had nothing to compare it to. We were in 2625 and 2626 if anyone knows if those units are considered to be "redone". :confused3

The decor was a bit dated but the general upkeep was very good. The feel of the resort was very cozy and we loved the pool area.

Our only complaint......the sofas in the living area were terrible. When you sat down you felt like you sunk to the floor and it was hard to get up out of them. I am only 39yo and had to fight to get up out of them. If my 80yo in-laws sat on those sofas they would be stuck in them for days! :lmao:

We will look forward to our next trip to OKW!

Can you tell its the oldest property? Yes. I am thinking about trying it, but not sure if the age of the property shows?? Yes (in some units). Would you choose OKW over other properties and why? No. Thanks for the info!! :woohoo:

We had a bad experience in a studio last summer. It definitely needed a rehab and we were not happy with the slow bus service or the dreaded walk to the main pool. I have promised myself (and Diane) that I would not start OKW bashing again so I will try to be nice. This is just how we feel about it and probably won't go back again until the memory fades. But many people love it and don't mind the hit or miss room condition. I WILL SAY that the grounds were beautiful and DS LOVED the slide in the main pool.

I think OKW is absolutely beautiful!!

All the photos are so gorgeous!

Interesting. You say you don't want to bash OKW, and then you do it anyway.:confused3 Just curious how many times you have stayed at OKW?

I would hardly call the room condition "hit and miss". We have stayed there many, many times, including last summer, and have never had a room that needed rehab. Our first stay was in '94. OKW has a rotating rehab schedule just like any other Disney resort. Not sure why your buses were so slow, but we were there from July 8- July 29 (excluding weekends) last summer and never had to wait long for the bus at all (just like all our previous trips to OKW). Yes, some units are a ways from the main pool, but there are three quiet pools and all units are close to a pool. There is now a booking category for HH area, which is where the main pool is. Every bus also stops at HH which means that you can hop on any bus and get to the main pool within minutes.

I agree that OKW is a lovely resort with a laid-back atmosphere and a lushly landscaped settings. The rooms are huge compared to other DVC resorts. I like having breakfast at Olivias.

Now la2kw.. AA wasn't bashing she was mearly letting the OP know that not all is rosey all the time at OKW. Not bashing, just informing.

It is a hike to the main pool from most of the Villa's... Most people just hop on the first bus that comes and get off at the HH, to speed things up.

And you can get a bad room there and you can also have a horrid vacation there.

But MOST people dont... and most people get good rooms, and most of the time the buses are running well, but not 100% of the time, and most people have wonderful vacations there.

And that can be said for ALL resorts DVC or not.

Yes! Thank you, Laurabearz! The OP asked for opinions about the resort and I gave mine mine and was trying to keep it short w/o rambling on. Here's a recent thread that sounds almost just like our experience last summer. I can so relate to this poster - their experience was just like ours. We were disappointed and will use our points elsewhere from now on. We wait all year for our summer vacation and do not wish to gamble on our room quality again. It only takes once to form an opinion that lasts forever. That's just the sad truth of it.
